Here is a chat system that I remember from my early internet experience called ICB. I did a Google last night and it seems to chug right along in the new millenium. There is a list of software to download too. Usually you will find 300-500 people on their main server. http://www.icb.net/ Here is a chat system that most everyone knows about. IRC or Internet Relay Chat is where most got their start chatting and it is still huge today. It was everyone's dream to run their own server, which is what I do today at http://www.1freeworld.net/chat.html. Try it out if you wish, it is open to all. I remember seeing people give reports on the Northridge earthquake and other natural disasters. I made a lot of friends on there that have faded away, but I have memories of good times.
