Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 is Released

I wrote an earlier short article on my Geeksters.org site about Mozilla Thunderbird, a free and user friendly e-mail client for many different operating systems. http://www.geeksters.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=229 I have shown Mozilla Thunderbird to several friends and clients and the overall impression is quite positive. I guess the question is "Why Thunderbird when I have Outlook Express?" The reason being is that Outlook Express is the target of virus writers everywhere. Also, the source code is freely available and is tested for bugs and exploits on a constant basis. Because of this constant testing, you may have to download updates much more often than in a closed soruce program. My take is that with the advent of the commercial and open Internet, it is the wise computer user that remains proactive with their computer and always keeps their software updated scanned for virii and spyware. Ok, I'll get off the soapbox....

Have you ever looked at the Evolution email system? If so, how does Thunderbird compare? -- Thanks

I have looked at Evolution but I'm not a big fan of the Outlook type of interface. Also, I demonstrated it to some clients awhile back and found some horrendous bugs in it. I'm sure they are fixed though. I believe Thunderbird has less power than Evolution and really targets the Eudora / Outlook Express crowd. My favorite? I'm a K-Mail guy. I also really liked the Sylfeed (sic) mail software too. Call me "old school" because I used Pine for a long time. One side benefit that most people won't realize, but others will is the cross platform capability of Thunderbird. There are realeases for Solaris, OS/2, Windows, Linux, xBSD and a few others. Sadly, I wish they had it for the "old world" Macs.

I've been using Evolution for a while and am not overly fond of it. It is a little too "outlook like" and it's junk mail filter does not seem to learn very well. It's contacts import functions are very weak as well. I think I'll give Thunderbird a go and see what I think. For the record, I still use pine to read the "root mail" on a couple of systems
