Windows 3.1 is a operating environment ( I say that because it is really not a complete operating system ) that has users to this day. I did an small story on my Geeksters site that discussed Calmira XP 4.0, a desktop replacement for the Program Manager in Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Windows NT 3.51. http://www.geeksters.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=452 I have a DRDOS / Windows for Workgroups 3.11 system on my hobby computer and it always fun to fire it up and see what the computing landscape was like in 1991. Here is a screenshot of the desktop in action: Calmira also sports a driver to give users true long filename support on the desktop. I also know of a FAT32 driver that you can load in DRDOS which allows users to read and write to the same filesystem that Windows 95.98 and ME uses. Still have a old 486 lying about? Just insert 16 megabytes of ram, a small harddrive ( I recommend about 300 to 500 megabytes minimum) and you can have all that you need to run a complete Windows 3.1 environment.
