Does KDE try to do too much?

I read a article about the useability of KDE 3.3.  I think this latest version is just wonderful, but, in all it's power and flexibility, has KDE made itself more complicated by trying to be everything to everyone?
Ever since KDE 1.0, it has been my windowing environment of choice.  I can make it look however I want, so I chose a MAC OS / KDE  hybrid look and I just love it.  Sometimes though, the choices can be overwhelming or just plain hard to find.
I feel that they should probably have a "KDE Lite" mode for new users and a way to switch easily to a "power user" mode.  Ever see XFCE? It is clean and easy to use but lacking in a key aspect....desktop icons.  Sure, you can extra tools to do that, but that's a pain for a new user.  Can a "KDE Lite" get the look of XFCE and yet have the things that make us love KDE?

I like Gnome; it's plain and simple and easy to use.  Maybe I'll give KDE another try though, i've not really tried it since 1.0.

I feel likewise about Gnome.  I will use it some more especially since my favorite KDE apps will work fine with it.  It looks great, but it tends to run slower on my hardware than KDE 3.  And XFCE, that's pretty stuff.  Now, if they only would put desktop icons into it......
