The Sharp Zaurus...The Beginning

I've just received my Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 from my bid on eBay.  It looks a bit worn, but booted right up.  I erased the personal settings in it and got started playing with it.  Some things I noticed were that the wireless network card that came with it didn't seat just right in the unit and I'll need to wedge something in there to make it work right.  Also, some key applications are not there such as a command prompt console.  I downloaded Gaim through the installed Opera 7 web browser and installed it but it did not show up in my applications.  I'll try to get a command prompt app loaded to find the problem.  I was able to type in the shoutbox however and even though I need to scroll a lot, the forum comes up perfect.  The tiny keyboard is a great feature for such a small PDA and it does the job nicely.  Stay tuned to more on my Zaurus journey here and on Geeksters.org.

This evening, I completed gathering all the pieces I need to get my Sharp Zaurus ready to go.  I have already picked up a leather case, a docking cradle and I'm waiting for a replacement battery and AC power supply.  I can use it now, but the battery doesn't last too long.  I can get only about 15-20 minutes from it.  I also ordered a small Compact Flash memory card so I can flash a new operating system and desktop on it.  I hope to have everything in place next weeked and I'll be loading OpenZaurus and the OPIE desktop on it.  It should be a big improvement over the default system.  What time I have spent with the Zaurus has reaffirmed it is what I was looking for in a organizer that has wireless internet capability.
