I picked up this radio at a thrift store Thursday for $9. I could not believe my eyes...

This is a Philips / Magnavox D2935 general coverage shortwave reciever. Originally, it sold for $179.00. It was highly rated in the Passport Guide to World Band Radio. It is a little roughly used and a section of antenna has been broken off. I found a luggage strap that fit perfectly on it. Being an experienced shortwave listener, how did it work?
I found reception on it fantastic. Single sideband ham radio signals really came in well. Unfortunately, static came in real well too. I'm not sure what is causing that. Maybe the fan to the HVAC system in the house? The adjacent channel rejection was very good too. No bleed over of signals to the next frequency. I also expected a radio that was beat up like this to have some problems, but I have found none. If you want to have hours of entertainment with a radio, there is nothing like a general coverage shortwave radio.

thats great reeree...
l meant, l'm not a fan of radio thow, cuz l choose to listen to music from my mp3 player or cd player cuz radio sumtimes got lotsa programs in every channel, l listen to some thow, but only in specific day and time table.
but for 9 bucks wow!!
u found a luggage strap that fit perfectly on it too, so its perfect 
about the static that came in real well... maybe you were right, it was caused by the fan to the HVAC system in the house... or lotsa problems in radio signals.
but then 
l'm not an expert on radio thingy, tried to made one when l'm in junior high school thow  heheh..

The thing I like about a radio like this is the sheer variety of what I can listen to. The BBC, Radio Japan, Radio Netherlands are all great stations. There are many more to listen to as well. I'll have to share the experience sometime soon about my little pocket shortwave. It can really get the stations too.
More important though is being able to catch ham radio signals. I'm not sure about other parts of the world, but in North America, ham radio is THE source of information during times of crisis or natural disaster. I can remember one year listening to a ham operator situated in the control tower of the big airport in Jamaca during a hurricane. It was really gripping stuff.

Sure you can! As long as they broadcast on the shortwave bands. I know that Indonesia has lots of local radio on shortwave. I have never recieved RRI personally though. I'll have to see if they have an international service.

My understanding is that you can receive some RRI signals all over the Pacific. I can't receive them here though. I have yet to look if RRI has an International Service. I used to routinely listen to Radio New Zealand. One year, I caught the Cricket World Cup entirely off of shortwave radio on Radio New Zealand. Radio Austrailia is an easy signal to catch in the mornings here. Sometimes, just down from their 9580 khz (if I remember right) frequency, there is a local Austrailian station relayed on that frequency intended for that area only. I could get that one sometimes too.
