If you haven't heard already, Arthur C. Clarke passed away at the age of 90. Many will know him through 2001: A Space Odyssey but he wrote many other books, both fiction and non-fiction, that were highly regarded. What made Clarke stand out as a writer was his scientific background and his vivid imagination. In his writings, technologies such as geosynchronous satellites, satellite communications and the Space Shuttle were predicted to come true. He was truly put "science" into science fiction and sat with Walter Cronkite analyzing two Apollo missions. His final work, The Last Theorem co-written with Fredrick Pohl will be released some time this year. My first experience with his writings was with a paperback collection of short stories that I found very entertaining as a teenager but I do remember the hype of 2001 in the late 60's when the movie came out. He will be missed for certain but his work lives on in bookstores, libraries and personal bookshelves the world over. Farewell, Arthur C. Clarke.
