Re-Reading Old Friends

I picked up the first three James Herriot books for next to nothing. If you have never read them before, the first book, All Creatures Great and Small is truely a pleasure to read. The people and experiences of this wonderful vet in 1930's Yorkshire should be a must read for anyone who loves to get lost in a good book. All of them are treasures. I haven't read them in many years and it is a comfort to say hello to old literary friends again.

I grew up reading James Herriot and giggling for days and days. I have all of his books in my collection:
All Things Bright and Beautiful
All Creatures Great and Small
All Things Wise and Wonderful
The Lord God Made Them All (yes, there's a fourth book, Virginia) 
as well as
Every Little Thing
Dog Stories
Cat Stories
I can still remember the Farnon Brothers, the time when Mr. Herriot bought an entire set of encyclopedia, the ghost played by the young Farnon, the strychnine poisoning and the male dog who had a testicular tumor secreting estrogen. I love all the stories told by Mr. Herriot and I treasure each and every one of these books.
I also grew up reading Nancy Drew Mystery Stories and all of Enid Blyton's fantastical children's books about brownies and Amelia Jane and pixies. Wow. I still have these books in my shelves right now and just the thought of the company they've given me while growing up is simply making me smile. Thanks, Booper!

I've made another group of old friends to re-read in a couple of years. I suggest A Year in Provence, by Peter Mayle. There are 3 in the series and each are glorious. Also, Tim Park's 2 books on Italian life in a village are wonderful as well. You will meet memorable people....people that are real. It is also fun to take out the map and see where Thirsk is or where in Provence the story takes place.

I haven't read any of James Herriot works yet. :-/ How sad, I feel so outdated. :P But I'm making it a promise to read even one book. Teamay, I grew up reading Nancy Drew as well and Hardy Boys too. I still re-read my all-time favorite Wakefield twins' stories and escapades every now and then. I think Elizabeth and Jessica will always be my favorite twins. Lol.
