Someone gifted me with a Hirschfeld On Line book some years ago and have since fallen in love with this masterful cartoonist's work in pen and ink-- his skillful artworks featuring many famous personalities in different genres and backgrounds. But I'm really partial to his Broadway celebs and shows sketches. I have 2 of his works which were gifts in the most recent years and I'm awaiting my 3rd most precious Hirschfeld Print! =)
Here’s a real treat, Al Hirschfeld’s grandson has posted this video to YouTube of the master himself creating a drawing of Paul Newman (in character for a production of Our Town).
The highlights: extreme close-ups of Al’s inkwell, his signature being written, and one of his trademark NINAs being drawn into the folds of Newman’s shirt.
