I originally posted this on Ree's thread but I was convinced by Krissy that it would be better to make a new thread out of this. Well I agreed and here it is... The Philippines/Metro Manila I think has one of the busiest, craziest, overwhelming stories around the globe what do you think? Here are some of the news makers and breakers and issues I think worth not to forget in the future; Negative news: One of the stories I'm still bitching about is the story about the Garci Tapes involving the 2004 elections here in the Philippines. Its something we have to know the truth about but were deprived. It involves President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, COMELEC Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano and the president's husband Mike Arroyo The fertilizer fund of the agriculture department that was used for election campaigning instead of the farmer beneficiaries. Involves no less than President Arroyo again?, agriculture officials like Usec Jocjoc Bolante , mayors and governors of different provinces in the country even those without farm lands like here in Las Pinas The P85 billion Marcos wealth where is it and who benefited from it? involves President Arroyo (again) And the latest...before the year ends... the NO-EL (no election) issue raised in the CHACHA or charter change or consitutional amendments... involves ofcourse who else the President as she is lobbying to stay in power a no election in 2007 is a great idea for all of them and the corrupt officials Fluctuating oil prices involves everyone around the world as its a global issue however here in the Philippines its the big three Petron, Shell and Caltex that was said to monopolize oil prices despite the big drop in the price two months ago. Good news: Philippines won the best invention regarding “coconut net and coco peat products" involves Bicolano Engineer Justino "BO" Arboleda , from the Bicol University College of Agriculture (BUCAF) is champion of the “World Challenge Contest for the Best Grassroots Project in the World” sponsored by the British Broadcasting Corporation in London, England. The Filipina chef at the White House. The US White House hired their first woman head chef - what’s more she’s Pinay! Philippine born and bred Cristeta Comerford graduated from the University of the Philippines with a bachelor's degree in Food Technology and has just been promoted to head chef of the White House kitchen where she's been serving since 1995. See the article on Yahoo News. Precious Lara Quigaman for winning the 2005 Ms. International after long years of waiting 1979 since last crowned. The success of the 2005 SEA (South East Asian) Games where lots of Filipino athlete won Gold medal. .... too many more to mention that's all I can think of at the moment.... Post away guys.... Filipino or not

Yesterday The Olongapo City Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday filed criminal charges against four US Marines for raping a 22-year old Filipino woman at the Subic Freeport last Nov. 1. Charged were Daniel Smith, Chad Carpenter, Keith Silkwood and Dominic Duplantis, all members of the US Marine Corps. Former witness Timoteo Soriano, who retracted his earlier testimony, was charged as an accomplice. Soriano was the driver of the Starex Van where the rape allegedly took place. But the charges against two other US Marines Albert Lara and Correy Barris were dropped for insufficiency of evidence. The charges were filed by Prosecutor Prudencio Jalandoni before the Olongapo City Regional Trial Court (RTC). The 4 US marines are now in the custody of the Manila US Embassy Christmas day Senator Robert Barbers died of heart attack complications of his throat surgery last year On-going for more than 2 weeks now Floodings at Mindoro has not abated and got worse again after heavy rain on Monday. The flood was a result of a dike that was ruined during a heavy storm that hit the area end of November. Yesterday The Philippine Supreme Court (SC) has cut the powers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to issue traffic violation receipt...now Manila traffic is expected to go to the dogs. Although its not an issue now since traffic is already worse especially this holiday season as MMDA lifted the Unified Vehicular Reduction Program (UVRP) popularly known as the number coding scheme. Today Finally...they realized that the Comission on elections (COMELEC) officials should be charged for the P1.3 billion poll modernization program or election automation that did not happened.

Good News BSP sees peso firming past 53:$ in 2006 Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco said on Thursday he expects the peso to strengthen past 53 per dollar with continued strong inflows of remittances in early 2006. Tetangco told reporters the expected rise in the value-added tax rate to 12 percent from 10 percent in February would boost investor confidence in the Philippines, helping to further lift the peso. The peso closed the year at 53.09 per dollar, a 6.1 percent gain from 2004 to make it the best-performing currency in Asia this year Bad news There's no stopping the EVAT Starting February 2006, the expanded value added tax (EVAT) of 10 to 12 percent from sales tax after the Supreme Court lifted the ban issued agains it. The government expects to raise an extra 2 billion-3 billion pesos (36 million to 54 million US dollars) in monthly revenues this year, which can ease the deteriorating budget deficit and national debts dragged by rising oil price and consistent political turbulence. New Chief Justice appointed orders revamp of SC Hilario G. Davide Jr. ... the one how inducted Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as Philippine President in 2001 retired as Chief Justice reaching the compulsory retirement age. He was replaced by Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban who just ordered a reorganization of the Supreme Court which will take effect in January 1, 2006.

Phil judges can arm selves after slain of PIATCO case judge Philippine magistrates can arm themselves now following the killing of Pasay City Judge Henrick Gingoyon in an ambush Saturday, December 30 in Cavite. Henrick is the judge who ordered the government to pay tens of millions of pesos in a legal battle over the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 3. The Supreme Court on Monday said the nation's magistrates may arm themselves if they receive death threats and has issued guideliness for arming judges. An artist's sketch of the man who gunned down Henrick Gingoyon near his residence has been released. Authorities describe the suspect as male, 28 to 30 years old, between 5'8" to 5'9" in height, with medium build. They said the man was wearing denim shorts, a black shirt, and a balaclava during the killing of Gingoyon. Police said they have yet to release a sketch of the second suspect driving the motorcycle with the gunman on board. 23rd Globe telecoms facility burned by NPA Communist rebels made their last assault for 2005, burning down Globe telecommunications tower in Occidental Mindoro on Friday . Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo on Saturday said about 20 New People’s Army guerrillas raided the tower in Sitio Bolo, Barangay Nicolas, Magsaysay. The rebels poured gasoline on the tower’s base and set it on fire. The raid took place hours before a two-day New Year cease-fire the government had declared was to take effect. However for first time in about two decades, the Communist Party of the Philippines did not declare a Christmas truce, saying the government was insincere in seeking peace. The peace talks are on hold. The CPP instead ordered the NPA, its armed wing, to intensify attacks on government forces. LPG gas price increase again The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has increased P2 per kilogram cylinder on Monday. Arnel Ty, president of LPG Marketers Association, said an 11-kg cylinder of LPG now costs P497 from its previous price of P475. He said the adjustment was due to higher demand for LPG worldwide despite price cuts for diesel and gasoline. He added that the international contract price of LPG has increased to $575 per metric ton in December from $538 in November. [b]Some of the predictions last year that happened:]/b] 1)Turmoil in the Arroyo administration and more divisive and unstable political situtation in the country. The impeachment raps against President Arroyo, the one-too-many coup attempts, one of the last ditch including retired Gen. Fortunato Abat's declaration of interim transitional government are a few of its indicators. 2)Death of big personalities in the Church and political scene . Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin died this year, before the year ended Sen. Robert Barbers died. Pope John Paul II died this year. 3)Unstable economy. Not just in the Philippines but all over the world as well. 4) Natural calamities expecially involving water. Floodings and typoons most including Hurricane Katrina and the big flood in Mindoro after the dike collapesed. 5) The Arroyo administration will soften on ousted President Joseph Estrada. They almost release him but noise makers halt it during the hieght of the impeachment case against President Arroyo. Before the year ended Sandiganbayan allowed President Estrada to celebrate New Year's with his family outside his detention camp. He has been detained for 5 years now and yet nothing happening in the plunder raps against him.

Mike Arroyo Takes SEAG Champs to Disneyland Philippine Daily Inquirer 12/21/2005 True to his promise, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo yesterday played Santa Claus to Filipino gold medalists in the recent Southeast Asian Games by taking them to Hong Kong for a fling at its magical Disneyland. All told, 337 people left on four separate planes -- one of them a chartered flight -- to celebrate in the magical kingdom of Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan and Tarzan the country's feat of winning the overall Games championship for the first time ever. Arroyo said the treat was financed by private sponsors and his friends who wanted to reward the athletes for propelling the Philippines to the top of the Games' gold medal chart. Airport officials, who had been previously reprimanded by their superiors for talking to media about the movements of members of the First Family, declined to release the full list of contingent members. But some 200 gold medalists were believed among those bound for Disneyland. Each athlete reportedly received $300 pocket money. Of the 337 holiday makers, officials at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport said 142 left on Philippine Airlines flight PR 300 at 8 a.m. They included 80 athletes, Arroyo, his son Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo and the latter's family.

| This was a good treat. Fine. But I was shaking my head when I tried to compute the expenses of the 337 people who came to Hong Kong to see Disneyland. And a round trip ticket, through Philppine Airline (PAL) is more or less HKD2,400.00 for a single person. What about the pocket money which was HK$ 300 each? Here is my computation: 2,400 HK$ x 337 -people = HK$ 808,800 + HK$300 -pocket money of each person x 337 people = HK$ 101,100 So all in all : HK$909,900.00 x 7.45 (current rate of HKD to Phil. Peso) = PHP 6,778,755.00 In HKD to USD: HK$909,900 divide it by 7.80 (= US$1 )= US$116,653.846 OK, that was with the expense of private sponsors. Great. But I am surprised how easy they could ask that amount from those sponsors. But what about when the country needs that amount? I doubt if they can ask from those friends and private sponsors that amount ,and instead they would file resolution to request goverment money. Think of the amount. Millions of Pesos. It could build a good bridge. It could put up school, it could provide foods for those street children, it could pay jobless people to clean those plastic, cellophanes scattered in Manila streets and blown up in the air by those jeepneys [LOL]. It could pay cleaners for those canals, and many more expamples in which it could be spent in helpful ways. So, folks, what do you think about this kind of spending ? Do you think this imprudent expenditure way of giving treat by the Pilippines' officials , material?
