We lost a great man over the weekend in Sir Edmund Hillary, who died of of heart failure at 88. This Wikipedia article gives a good brief biography of his life:

I heard a commentary on NPR this morning that described the man he was. He was still listed in the local phone book and was always accessible for an interview. He was a kind and compassionate man who did much for the Sherpas of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust. He will be honored and missed by many.
