A holiday in Debate will fall upon us shortly in the United States known as Halloween. I remember as a child going door to door trick or treating. Dressing up usually as a Ghost since that is the easiest costume to make. As I got older I heard the debates that it is an introduction to the Occult. You have one side saying it doesn't mean anything it is just kids pretending going for candy having fun they don't put any meaning behind it. I can look back in my childhood and think about it and I don't believe I put any other meaning in it other then getting Candy. When I got Older I remember teen agers getting out there ouiji boards and calling upon the spirit world as a Party game. A some of those Teens got deep in cultic beliefs and a few of them are still deep with in them. So I think when a lot of people say the holiday is not that bad. It is just kids having fun.
Halloween comes from 3 traditions.
The oldest being from the Drued traditions of Scotland and Ireland. Where November 1st was the beginning of the New Year. So October 31st would be the end of the year, they believed that this was a time of the planet dying and that it was when the living world was closets to the dead world. There would be a feast on that night So people would go door to door collecting edibles for their feast. Great bonfires would be built on hills to scare away evil spirits and to light the way for dead family members to find their way home. To their families, after awhile people started to leave the tradition because they not actually seen ghost or Goblins however the children took up the practice and added the twist of tricks and their acts of tricks would be blamed upon Ghost and Goblins.
The Second thing adding to the modern tradition of Halloween comes from when the Catholic Church entered into Europe. The Catholic church would destroy the pagan temples of Diane and Apollo and etc. However just because you destroy the place of worship doesn't mean you stop the believers. The Pagan groups sort of gathered together and became a witch craft Cult in time. They gathered in what was known as witches mass and one of these Masses on Oct 31 they were often seen with black cats and Ravens. That is where we get the pumpkins and black cats.
Now for the third factor Contributing to the Modern day Halloween. The early catholic church use to take a day to remember a particular saint. It got to the point that there were more saints then their were days. In 631 A.D. The Catholic church was giving the pocession of the Roman Parthanon (Where Rome use to Worship their Many gods). The Catholic church being wrapped at this time with a lot of Pagan Ideas. One that God was far away and to busy to directly inter react with man so we were to mediate through the saints of Old. Any how since there was so many saints and so few days Rome decided that one day to honor all the saints would be best. This would be November first and the night before there would be a feast Called O Hallos Even. In time got shortened to Halloween.
Halloween was brought to the United states by Irish immigrates, til it even though it was looked down on by other colonist at first. In time it infiltrated every every of the United States.
My house doesn't observe Halloween we observe Reformation day. The day that Martin Luther nailed his 30 page Thesis. Giving birth to the Reformation and the Catholics Counter Reformation. I still hand out candy to all the little trick or Treaters but there is a Christian addition being tracks or like this year I plan to give out gift bibles as well as Candy. I think it is best to avoid Pagan practices to the point where it can have a direct effect on your life. However it gives you a chance to show light to the world As a follower of the King of Light truth and Love we are called to be light and Salt....
