Examing The Bible

A lot of people read the bible like it was a set of Stereo instructions, when the bible was not writing that way. Then you have people that read it like it is a menu, taking bits and peaces out of it out of context. To understand the bible is understand how it was written and for whom it is written. As an Orthodox Christian I take the bible as the inerrant and inspired word of God. Let me expound on inspired a bit the word for inspired is not what we commonly use in English. Most people take Inspire to mean you get filled with an emotion and you write a song or something but the biblical meaning of Inspired is a little different instead of breathed in it is breathed out God's inspiration floods out of you and not into you. The Bible was written in a Literary fashion, with metaphors and imagery. You have to remember the time the bible was written more people were illiterate the literate. So it was written with picture images so that the people would remember what they heard in the synagogue or Temple. So when the bible uses Dragon for example it is not calling the devil a literal dragon but comparing his personality. The bible was written on 3 Continents in 4 languages by 36 Authors with one constant theme over 1400 years. Another thing to think about when reading the bible you can't truly understand the new testament until you understand the old testament. Since the New was written in the same literary style. Since the people getting the New Testaments letters were very familiar with the old Testament there is a lot of things said that come straight from the old testament. Give you one statement that lot of people don't really understand if they don't understand the old Testament Jesus calls himself the son of Man a lot of people take this to be a humble title but if you read Daniel you find out that is a majestic title. So let us start at the beginning and work through the bible starting at the beginning. I will not be covering the extra books in the Catholic bible, because it really is secondary literature and not solid scripture. Granted the books like the Macabees do have historical value cause from it you learn how the Pharasee's got their position. I will also skip the long list of father and sons, however if you do the math it puts the creation of the Earth about 4000 B.C. Sorry Darwin your a few million years off.
Genesis the first book of the bible are apart of the first five books known as the Pentateuch by Christians and the Tora by the Jews. Even though as Christians we know them as the books of the law. Tora means Teaching in Ancient Hebrew. Genesis means beginning so that is where it starts. It was originally laid out in 10 sections toledots meaning generations of. There is dispute over who wrote the books claiming that more then one author wrote the book because of what they call Duplets for example Genesis 1 and 2. Genesis 1 gives out the outline and Genesis 2 goes more into detail a common literary style but critic claim that means different authors. They also use the different way God is addressed in the so called duplets. I believe it is a means of keeping the writing from being dry. Since I see it in the many different writings I have seen evne from that time period. That alone settles the dispute for me that Moses wrote the first five books. Yet also Since Jesus said that he did it affirms that belief. I may say things in this extended study of the bible you may or may not agree with but I hope to increase understanding

Genesis 1
1) In the beginning (bereshit) God (Elohim) Created (bara) the heavens and the earth.
2) And the earth was without form, and void (tohu wabohu); and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God moved up the face of the waters.
3) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4) And God saw the Light, that it was Good: and God Divided the light from the darkness.
5) And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Bereshit is hebrew for the absolute beginning, Elohim is the Name of God in the Hebrew language. Elohim is actually plural which some theologins indicates that this is the first hint of the trinity. There are others that will say no that is just a majestic vocabulary using the example of Queen Victoria when she made the "Comment we are not ammused". Then there are the none christian and jews who claimed that the origins of Jewdism had many gods and was edited to one after ward. I tend to lean toward that it is a majestic title even though it was only used for the name of God, however will accept that it is a fore shadow a hint toward the trinity.
God created the light before he created the stars, which is an interesting thing to note God divided it creating night and day. A lot of Christians fill that each day of creation was actually periods of time an not actually days like laid out here Feeling that creation may have taken thousands of years. There is the other side of the debate which I am on that it is an actual six days. Because it talks about the evening and morning were the first day. Also the fact that God is all powerful I believe he could have done it in a single day if he wanted,(Genesis is a historical narative with poetic writing so I will except that I might be on the wrong side.) The people will use the thousands of years because the word used for day is Yom and Moses wrote in a psalms that a thousand years is like a day to the Lord. Using the same word for day Yom. They will use other things like that but I will stick with the 6 days. You will also have people completely out side the vail of orthodoxy that will say yom means periods of time so that they can say that God used Evolution to create taking away the clear text of Genesis. Since God created things and they were all good when he created them then the evolution idea just doesn't seem to make sense to me. Also since fosilized Dinosaurs bones have been found with cancer in thier bones. Cancer is the result of Sin, would put them after the creation of Adam and Eve. Evolution has no place in Christianity, Also has no place in Science if you ask me.
Second day:
6) And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7) And God made the the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
 And God called the fimament Heaven. And the Evening and the morning were the second day.
God divided the water supernaturally seperating the oceans to create atmosphere and sky. Some scholars feel that it was about half the water creating a very very thick atmosphere Which may have been the source for the abundance of water from Noahs Flood. With the extremely thick atmosphere it was a great green house effect that may have kept the entire earth at a steady temperature pole to pole. Which would explain the mass extintion of dinosaurs they were use to a temperate climate before the flood and couldn't adapt to the new weather enivorment. I would like living on the equator to being transported to the South Pole. Since Dinosaurs are Reptiles they were cold blooded. Such a tramatic change would be detramental to the species.
Third day:
9) And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10) And God called the dry land Earth: and the gathering of waters called he Seas: And God saw that it was good.
11) And God said, Let the earth bring fourth Grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yieldind fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth and it was so.
12) And the earth brought forth grass, and the herb yielding seed after his kind and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13) And the evening and the morning were the third day.
God created grasses herbs and trees, all reproducing itself like today so an apple tree always brings an apple tree and not another type of fruit tree.

16) And God made two Great lights--the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night--and the stars

19) And there was evening and there was morning, the foruth day.
Here it is clear when God made all the stars of heavens the moon and sun. I also believe that is when God started the rotation of the planet and the orbit around the sun. There is a difference so you don't die and go to outer space. Obviously when it talks about the Great light ruling the day being the sun and the lesser light being the moon. Granted there are larger stars in the universe that are much greater then our sun however it is talking from our prespective on Earth. There are 3 levels of heaven in hebrew First being the home of birds and clouds.(Dan 4:12,Matt 6:26) Second Level Heaven home of the stars moon and Sun (Ps 19:1) and the Third Level of Heaven, the home of departed angels and saints (2Corin 12:2)
The creation of the heavenly bodies had many functions one to remind the People of Gods creative work (Ps 8 2 For the seasons 3 for light. Out of the bible to the science relm since for a fundamental Christian they are the same. Our moon is the only moon in the solar system that is able to do a perfect solar eclipse with the sun which is important. From studying Solar Eclipses they were able to determine to tell what makes up the sun so reason four is so tha we could learn of his creative work and how it works.
20) And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures. and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.
21)S God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves with which the waters swarm, according to thier kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22) And God blessed them, saying "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.
23) And there was evening and there was morning, the fith day

haven't stopped just in the process of moving so my time is quite consumed at the moment but I don't plan to stop til I get to Revelations
