Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Mar 12th, 2005, 7:23am Ok........So just let me kick this Thread Off! I have installed on my comp...Zone Alarm Version 5.5 & Ad Aware 6.0 (that I run every couple of days to get rid of tha' Cookies) and I also try to update them every few days. I also have Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro that I use every few days and update religiously. I delete my temp Internet files at least once a week. So my question is this....I can't help but feel that I should be doing something else in my maintenance program or should I have another program Installed on my Comp to either protect me better or make my comp operate better. Well...Do I? What do you run/use on your comp and is it better than what I am using/doing now? Keep in mind Im on Freakin' Dialup here folks...lol [smiley=computer.gif] |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by okasantina on Mar 12th, 2005, 12:47pm I have also the same dial up connection like ures Dales...i also have Norton Anti VIrus that i usually use once a week. I even have a Zone Alarm but its called a PC Gate and it works really well for me...One time i had this terrible lag..and what i did was i just scanned my pc with Norton. Sometimes lots of files or pics on the pc made ure pc moves slow....So if there are unwanted files..i just deleted it.. I only use a prepaid card too..with 57 kbps but sometimes it runs only 37.5 kbps..but still it works well for me. When i am in the room...i am sending pics at the same time and loading songs at the same time...still working. But there are times my connection sucks thats because the telephone cable has a problem and not the connection itself. So i think u should also check ure phone cable maybe thats the problem or u better check the configuration on the properties of ure connection. ::) |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Mar 12th, 2005, 9:55pm Tina, You mean I am not alone! I thought I was the Last Person using Dail-Up on Earth! lmao [smiley=alien.gif] I live in an area that isn't close to a Major city, and the phone lines are older and can't handle High-Speed, so I only have the Dail-Up option...Yuck! [smiley=turtle.gif] My Dial-Up speed is usually 45.2 kb's/sec with a max of 48kb's/sec! That isn't even the normal 56K that my modem can process. Ohh well...whaaaataaa am I gonnnaaa do. That's Life Ehh. |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Mar 14th, 2005, 10:00am I need some TECH Help! I get a Pop-Up sometimes when I turn off my computer. It has the Normal Windows sound, and this Pop-Up occurs right before my comp shuts off. The Code Line is: USRprbdA.exe And the First line of the Text is: Failure To Execute... I did a search in my comp, and the "USR" portion is my Modem (US Robotics) Here is what I think the code in the Pop-Up means... USR: This is to do with my Modem pr : This means "port" bd : This means "Back Door" A : This is means ? exe: This is "Execute" So my Question is this...... Am I Right...or just SUPER Paranoid? Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what the Heck this Pop-Up Means and what I have to do to get rid of it or correct the situation? Does someone have control or access to my comp? |
||
Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by ReeBop on Mar 15th, 2005, 7:12am Dale, that is a program related to a USRobotics modem. If you still use that modem, In Win ExPee, I recommend that you remove the modem, restart your Windows, shut down, then reinstall the modem. This should reinstall the driver properly. If you are running Windows ME/98, just reload the driver with the software provided with the modem. [smiley=detective.gif] |

I am glad to hear that it's just a bug in the Modem Driver Softwear. Cool.... "Expee" LMAO... Good One! [smiley=peace.gif] |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Mar 26th, 2005, 8:04am I have a Few Questions. I use Norton Anti-Virus Professional Edition 2004. I just want to know how often it is supposed to download updates. I manually use the "Live Update" feature several times a week, and I can't seem to remember the last time I had any updates to download. I think I get an update about twice a month. Is that NORMAL? Will the Norton automatically download updates once I come online. I have given the Norton Program full access through my Zone Alarm Firewall. Hmmm...maybe I am Super-Paranoid. lol Another Question about Norton deals with my Auto-Scan feature. I have set the feature to preform an indepth scan of all my files and drives once a week on Fridays 8pm. My question is this...if I am not online at that time, will the program still scan my files or will the program skip the procedure until the next time the computer is turned on at the proper scan time and date? I have always wondered about that. ??? |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by ReeBop on Mar 26th, 2005, 10:09pm Dale, You need to setup Live Update to fetch your updates automatically. I recommend once per week. I also recommend you do it before your weekly scan. Yes, you do need to punch through your firewall to allow Live Update to access the Internet. The reason why you want to do a weekly is that Symantec and McAfee are a virus target from time to time and a virus payload package can change the way that these anti-virus programs look at your files on your harddrive. More than once, I have removed trojans and other forms of virii with a supposedly updated Norton or McAfee because a virus got to it first before a critical update was downloaded. Also, I have seen these virii packages stop Live Update from working properly to also make the user believe that everything is ok. You may try and create a "ultimate" boot cdrom for your operating system and stick on there F-Prot for DOS. Check out these links for some info: Ultimate Boot CD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/faq.html UBCD http://ubcd4win.com/ I know we are not always techically oriented here and I never expect people to be. If you find yourself in constant virus trouble, these are tools constructed to help you. Or, you can ask questions here or just pay a guy like me to fix it ;D [smiley=icon_drink.gif] |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Jul 10th, 2005, 8:25pm Is SPYWARE the same thing as a "TRACKING COOKIE"?? Or is SPYWARE something totally different? I think I need a Techy Translation Ehh. [smiley=computer.gif] |
||
Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by ReeBop on Jul 13th, 2005, 7:11am Tracking cookies are not spyware, but, are found by spyware detection programs because they can report back to an outside party what your internet habits are. When you run a program like Spybot, it will delete all those tracking cookes so the info they carry won't get back to the company that is wanting that information. I hope that helps. Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Jul 13th, 2005, 7:28am I run AD-AWARE....is that the same thing...and does it do the same job as SPYBOT? |
||
Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by ReeBop on Jul 14th, 2005, 7:33am Yes Dale, it accomplishes the same thing. I used AdAware before, but switched to Spybot three years ago. [smiley=bobby.gif] |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Coochie on Jul 18th, 2005, 5:11am Ree why is my explorer always crash!! :-[ :( |
||
Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by ReeBop on Jul 21st, 2005, 10:36pm If it's Internet Explorer crashing all the time, you may need to make sure it's upgraded or better still, use Firefox or Opera. If it's your desktop crashing and you get a "Blue Screen of Death", that suggests a buggy program eating all your memory or Windows is not managing your memory properly anymore. It will also depend on what version you are using. Like always, like water rushing through a gorge, I will always tell people to stop using that crap called Internet Explorer. [smiley=beret.gif] |

Ree, What the Heck is the "Blue Screen of Death"? I get a blue screen Microsoft message about once every month or two and it says something like "Checking Disk Consistancy"...Blah...Blah...and that I can skip the function by pressing any key, but I usually go ahead with the process. I do however get what you MIGHT call the "Blue Screen of Death" about once every 6 months or so. It comes on and says something like...."Dumping Physical Memory....then it says "Deleting....Deleting...and this happens Super-Fast. I then get Paraniod...and I jump up and unplug my comp from the wall to quickly put an end to the madness. When I Re-Start...I get the usual message "Your Computer has Recovered from a Serious Error" . So my Q is this....Is this the "Blue Screen of Death" that you speak of...and how do I solve this problem? And No...Firearms are not a Viable Option. |

Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by ReeBop on Aug 1st, 2005, 7:01am Yes, this is a type of BSOD that you can get from Windows. You get BSODs from programs that are not playing well with Windows. In your case, it sounds like a particular program may have a "memory leak". That's a program that starts using more and more memory until it reaches the point where the program itself has used all the physical memory of the machine. My advice, is to keep tabs with your Task Manager to see what program is chewing your memory up. When you find out which program it is, check to see if there is a patch or update for it. Title: Re: The Virus, Worm, Security & Hacker Thread Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Oct 16th, 2005, 6:38am Ree, I just Noticed that when I log onto some Yahoo Chat Rooms there is a Message that may or may not be New. It says... Logged into Such and Such a room...yadda yadda yadda, then it says.... "Visit http://ca.yahoo.com/ (Notification: Your IP Address is Currently being Recorded.)" Ok..Just what EXACTLY does that mean, and what Purpose is being served by recording my IP address? And just WHO is recording my IP Address and WHY? |

Dale, This is a new policy that Yahoo is informing you about in regard to their action of removing child / teen access to Yahoo Chat rooms. Actually, they have been logging IP addresses the entire time, but did not tell you so. Most any server program generates user logs. Any website you go to logs the user's IP address, IRC server, instant messaging server... all of them. It's really nothing to worry about and Yahoo feels that this disclaimer covers them. They are walking the fine line between the New York Attorney General and their users. [smiley=detective.gif] |
