Title: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by ReeBop on Sep 16th, 2005, 6:53am I downloaded and installed the new Yahoo Messenger the other day. Let me say that I was quite disappointed. My disappointment stemmed from the changes in Voice Chat. If they are not going to embrace cross platform H.323 Internet Telephoney standards, why change what was a very good quality voice chat? The drop in quality was very apparent when I tested the new Voice Chat in a PM box. What it did was remind me of Skype. Yahoo Messenger though, is not Skype. Skype is not to H.323 standards either, but you know what you are getting with Skype...and that's cross platform software and a true VoIP capability. When the new Gizmo service finishes their Linux client, that will be like a Skype with H.323 standards compliance. What Yahoo is playing at with making people think that this new Voice Chat is new and wonderful, I do not know. I was so disappointed with it, that I didn't bother to test the other new features of Yahoo Messenger. The ability to show groups of photos is an interesting feature. Unfortunately, the highlight of this package, Voice Chat, made me uninstall the software in a couple of days and reinstall the old version. What are your impressions? [smiley=detective.gif] |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by nOrKAy on Nov 22nd, 2005, 11:04am I did uninstall the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger, either. And I have the same question ReeBop. Why do we need to have a new feature when we have a clear voice chat. I tried this feature too, thinking it would be fun. The person whom I tried with, using this feature, was even my neighbor, but it's very unclear/ frustrating. We could hardly understand with each other. Futile. |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by ReeBop on Nov 22nd, 2005, 9:14pm I think they have chosen this route for one reason, Kris. Skype. Plain and simple. Yahoo feels they can turn their IM / video / voice client into a Skype killer. The problem is that Yahoo's original voice chat was so much better. Why not keep to your strong points and make the service better overall such as computer resource friendly? With each release, Messenger runs slower. Also, it becomes more and more a strictly Windows operation. The beauty of Skype? Cross platform capability. Runs great on Linux! Does Yahoo fear that their service will fall by the wayside because of VoIP? It didn't happen to ICQ. Have millions of people moved away from Yahoo Messenger to Skype? Nope. I feel they are taking a big chance by trying to get more "eyes" on the built in advertisements that Messenger delivers by making Messenger more of a VoIP service. Will the existing userbase tolerate this if older versions of Messenger won't work anymore? Time will tell... [smiley=soapbox.gif] |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Nov 9th, 2006, 5:21am Ree, Over the last few weeks I have noticed something with my Yahoo Messenger. I noticed that sometimes an ID I don't have in my friends or members list will log out with the usual pop-up and old door sound. This has happened a few times with one ID, then just now it happened with a few more that I don't know or have any idea where they came from. My question to you is what's wrong with my Yahoo account or is this a more serious problem with my computer in general and how the heck can I stop what's going on? Ever heard of this before? Any Suggestions? |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Nov 10th, 2006, 8:02pm Tina, The one ID that I wrote down was "xemobangsx". I seached Yahoo for the Profile and it's there. I also Googled the word and came up with a Myspace page of a 14 yr old girl. The link is also on her Yahoo Profile. Dangit I don't know this girl from a hole in the wall. I seriously doubt that she is a ghost ID from someone on my list, I think she's a real person seperate from my list, but all I want to know is what's going on. It also says on myspace when I logged on that she is connected to me in some way "Stevie Wonder is in your Extended Network". Here is her Myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/keyleeb313 Ree, any thoughts on what's going on? ??? |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by ReeBop on Nov 12th, 2006, 5:57am It may be a behavior of your newer Yahoo Messenger. My version 6 does not do that but I do have "buddies" pop up that I know nothing about on my Gyachi for Linux. |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by Need4Speed8DaleJr on Nov 14th, 2006, 10:07pm Hmmm...this only seems to happen when I enter certain Yahoo Chat Rooms. (No, AC1 isn't one of them). And while I'm there I have the problem of numerous other unknown ID's leaving my contact list, sometimes as many as 8 or 10 every 5 minutes. Is it possible that someone has gained access to my ID and is using it somehow? I have noticed no other ill effects, and no one on my contact list reports anything strange or unusual. |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by ReeBop on Nov 15th, 2006, 3:54am nope, I think it is the way the new yahoo clients since verison 7 interact with the yahoo protocol. It happens on my Gyach Enhanced, which also uses the latest YMSG protocol. I do not think anyone has gotten into your ID, dale. |

Title: Re: The New Yahoo Messenger...Opinions? Post by nOrKAy on Nov 15th, 2006, 1:17pm Dale, I do agree with ReeBop. I had the same encounter when I downloaded the newer Yahoo Messenger version. I consulted my tech and advised me to go back to the older version and since that, I remained with it. Regarding with the ID who has a MySpace account, no, you are not connected to her. Every profile that you will visit or open on Myspace , you will read that headline, the person is one of your friends or not. So, why don't you try having the older Yahoo Msgr. version back and see if you will still encounter the problem? ;D By the way, missed ya buddy ! ;) |
