wats the advantages and disadvantages if i used mandrake than redhat or vice versa...i really wanna know the different and which is better bout the two....

educate me... ;D

well, the sad thing is that redhat is out of the "affordable" distro business....you have to go with the Fedora Core now. I use RedHat 7.3 on my 8 internet servers. I tend to use Mandrake on my desktops. I found that Mandrake tends to do some strange things on the server end by default; like their apache setup. RedHat though has made too many changes to KDE....changes I don't like for the sake of making their distro "easy to use". By loading up the proper software, that can be remedied. I would recommend Mandrake for beginners for the fact it comes with lots of software to try out and play with. And, they will support the core software components (ie. kernel, apache and stuff) for 18 months.

how hard is it to update redhat server 7 to a modern release? with the server package i beleive i still have unused tech support and a ton of programs, all business applications, but i am unsure about the tech support, need to look into that again

just about impossible....just to update 7.3, I had to load version 8 first, then go to the Fedora Core. It would not update from 7.3 to FC. Then you have the added fun of going from what is I believe a 2.2 series kernel up to 2.4. With all the updated libraries and gcc, any existing programs you have may not run at all even if you do get it updated. My advice is if you have data and settings, is to tar up your /etc directory and store that on cd or on your network. That will have all your webserver, hosts...all the config files for your system.

ok just download the red hat linux on mah other laptop , didnt do anything on it yet .. still busy wiff mah paper works ... one thing i hate bout japanese company .... they aint gonna pay mah leave for free ::) ::) ::) ::) :'( :'( :'( :'(

Hey jinx, I would go after the Fedora Core 1 instead of Red Hat. This is basically the new Red Hat. There will be no more Red Hat consumer products. If you are going to be doing sys admin stuff, you may have a look a White Box Linux Enterprise. This work is created off of the Red Hat Enterprise 3.0.

i think commercially, red hat is much more popular than mandrake since more industries using RH than MDK...errr

am i rite mike?

Well, not anymore. Red Hat as we know it is no longer sold. It is now known as the Fedora Core. I'm running Fedora Core on the desktop at the moment, and it seems ok. I like Mandrake a lot on the desktop, but the 9.2 release had a lot of bugs when it was released and a lot of updating needed to be done straight away. RHEL 3.0 I'm sure is a nice product, but it is very very expensive....for a guy like me. There is a version put together from the source RPMS called WhiteBox Linux. We'll see how that works out. As for now, I will keep RedHat 7.3 on the servers.
