I posted this news story on Geeksters.org today:

It is unsure how the public would react to a Google operating system.  One thing is for sure, with the price and system requirements of Microsoft Vista, the entry of Google into operating systems could be very well recieved.  Here is a picture of the desktop they are working on:

The key is simplicity.  It even could be said that it would be more ¨appliance¨ like in appearance.  The system, based on Ubuntu Linux, is not really the way I lay out my system, but I could see the possibilities of this being popular for many casual users.
