I did a story about this and I feel it is important. This is really what the iPhone should have been.

The OpenMoko Neo 1973 phone is similar to the iPhone but different in two huge areas. First, you can use this phone with any GPRS cell carrier. The quad band capability of this phone will enable people from all over the world to use it. Second, the operating system and everything on it is open source. At 1500 packages and a new developer portal opening, you will find a amazing array of software coming to this phone soon. The price point, at $300 may be steep, but it is not much more than what I paid for a deeply discounted Handspring Treo 650. Apple's iPhone is tied to whatever carrier they choose to partner with (ie AT&T in the US) and there is no software development kit available to write programs for it. You even have to send your iPhone in to get the battery replaced. Is this our future? I certainly hope not. I do hope that OpenMoko is though.
