Title: The Pioneer Laserdisc Post by ReeBop on Nov 9th, 2005, 8:16am I picked up a Pioneer LaserDisc at a thrift store last week. This was a precursor to the DVD. If you don't know what a LaserDisc system is, here a link for you to look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laserdisc I found a source at my favorite Dallas used book store for lots of reasonably priced LaserDisc movies. Most of them are in widescreen format. The discs themselves are the size of a record album and silver like a cdrom. The amazing thing is that these are still being made in Japan and are quite popular. In fact, in my reading about the unit, some people prefer the analog quality of the movie over the digital quality of DVD. Reminds me of the "record album vs. audio cd" argument. I have to admit though, the quality was excellent on the movies I bought but there is a hassle in changing sides and / or discs during the movie. I always thought record albums sounded "richer" than audio cds...could I find LaserDiscs the same? [smiley=dolphin.gif] |

Title: Re: The Pioneer Laserdisc Post by dOnUtz 9urL on Nov 10th, 2005, 7:34am laser hmmm.... it reminded me of watching movies with it long time ago... sounded old thow, mikey... but then you are right, the wider screen is great, compare if you use the DVD, the hard part is to find it, cuz its kinda old technology so not lotsa store selling it. l hope they will create the "mix" between DVD and laser disc ;D ;D |

I always say what's still the use of it that we still need to keep it. Now I have just realised ,I think it's an amazing thing to have kept one and put as a display in a music room? I think people who will be seeing it will smile,amazed and to "wow" them for still having one of the oldest players. I only see 3 LaserDiscs kept with the player. I really always thought it's a garbage before. I have an idea.LOL. I will keep it and sell to antique lovers,soon. LOL. |

Title: Re: The Pioneer Laserdisc Post by ReeBop on Nov 11th, 2005, 5:50am I got my player for $20 with the remote. It is in great condition. That's about the going price on eBay as well. I am sure they will get more LaserDisc movies at the used book store soon, as their supply was a little short. They go from $1 to $9 for some titles. They have several Japanese Manga titles as well too, for more money. Makes me think about VCDs. Did you know that they still put new movies on them? Not bad prices either...about $8 to $10 per movie from what I've seen on websites. I have lots of movies as "raw mpegs" here at home, which are of VCD quality. I love the fact they will play on most any computer that has a decent video card and speed. I've watched movies in DOS, Windows 3.1 and OS/2. [smiley=computer.gif] |

I have noticed some things about the LaserDisc format. There is no pixtelization, no jumpiness. That is because it is an analog signal from the platter to your TV. Every DVD player I have had jumps a little during the movie or you can detect pixelization in some of the scenes. So, I guess the comparison to the "vinyl vs. cd" argument holds true. I bought another movie last Friday for $2.00. I hope they get more in soon because early in the year, they sure did have a great selection of movies. [smiley=popcorn.gif] |

Title: Re: The Pioneer Laserdisc Post by mixin4livin on Nov 26th, 2005, 10:21am Hey Listen up Homies..Pioneer is expensive coz it is a good product and has a good demand in the market.Denon is also ok I dont say no but Pioneer is a Legendary Logo or name I would say and Pioneer did everything first before Dennon... Check out the Pioneer DVJ series.. It's about US$ 1,000 guess what u get ..its a multifunctional player which can run DVD's MP3, Audio etc ..This is made for proffessional users.. u can even DJ with this..it has a speed controle and a big jog wheel on top to make the DJ easy to scratch DVD's. Imagine u watch a clip and u hear it scratch when it goes forward and backwards wow great.. Say goodbye to Laser Discs guys..its still worth keeping it at home if u like Pioneer products but where could u find Laser Discs these days..if the Laser disc can Pick up smaller cd's then give it to a pro-technician and modify the lense or fix a new multy lense to run multiy functional CD's. I picked up a LaserDisc player because there is a used book store in Dallas that has a great selection of movies for cheap. Cheap means $1 up to $10 dollars. I've bought several $1, $2 and $3 movies already. I have to say that the quality of those movies are very very good. Unfortunatley, a guy at the store told me that people have been buying them strictly for their covers to hang on their movie room walls. Dang! He never met a LaserDisc owner before....hehehehe. |
