I wrote an article on Geeksters.org on this scam after reading someone's hard luck story on Craigslist:

I couldn't believe that this scam still exists to this day. They even have websites to promote this. I first ran across this back in the mid 80's but was aware of them through a local news broadcast that the fraud was occurring in my area. Back at that time, they were selling "Pilot" brand speakers that looked so shoddy, only an idiot would consider them. In fact, several "idiots" were bilked for hundreds of dollars from "white van" hucksters. Today's criminals have it better as the new "junk" products actually look very good on the outside to fool those not knowledgeable. It is amazing that these operations still flourish today.
