Title: Room Hacker Threats Post by ReeBop on Dec 17th, 2004, 8:16pm Well, here I go on the soapbox. Last night, someone decided to threaten me and others that he would just "f**k up our computers. Folks, I'm a paid professional, and this crap is getting tiring. First of all, people who brag about hacking your machine in a Yahoo chat room is not a hacker. Someone who writes boot scripts or downloads them from "b00terz" sites is not a hacker. It does make me angry though that these people seem to direct the room through fear. The question is, how do you stop them? First of all, get rid of Yahoo Messenger. I know you have seen me promote YahElite or YM!Lite on many occasions. I know that some of you fear the interface or find them a little too complicated. Just give them some patience and you can get used to them. Why switch programs? Because booter programs come mostly from the same codebase that is traded around yahoo chat and the internet. These booters are specifically designed to affect defects in the Yahoo Messenger protocol and Microsoft runtime libraries. There are major corporations that will not allow you to run poorly crafted software such as Yahoo Messenger. YahElite is written in GCC. GCC is always being updated for performance and security. Be sure to run YahElite or YM!Lite in YCHT protocol mode for maximum protection. What other tools can help you guard against these bragging morons? I recommend for anti-virus the free programs Anti-Vir. Why Anti-Vir? This program has successfully protected friends and clients of mine for a few years now. The software is a free download and does not require any registration or dna sample for personal use. Why not Norton or McAfee? Norton seems to not be able to do much about a virus when you catch it and it takes a special utility to get rid of anything. I have also found that it has missed virii and other malicious software over time. McAfee is a disaster of a anti-virus and virus writers seem to always get around it's scanning capabilities. The next tool I recommend is ZoneAlarm. I'm not a huge fan of Windows personal firewalls, but with all it's warts, I have found ZoneAlarm the easiest for the end user to configure and maintain. It is also a free download for personal use. One caveat though is that it can slow down your internet connection some. Norton, McAfee and Black Ice are nearly useless and security people will tell you to avoid them. Kerio and Sygate are good, but not as simple to configure and maintain. Router products such as Linksys that advertise that they are firewalls are not true firewalls. Do not be fooled into thinking that the "NAT Firewall" on the box is a true firewall. NAT is just one tool that can be used to protect yourself, but can be comprimised on it's own. Third, I recommend SpyBot Search & Destroy. It is free software that tracks down spyware components on your system that you get when you download free search bars for Internet Explorer. Wild Tangent, Gator and Kaaza are nasty spyware programs. Wild Tangent can slow down your internet connection by 50%. AdAware is ok, but I found SpyBot ran smoother, and tended to find more spyware if you kept it updated. I feel with these software tools, we can laugh at these so called "experts" and finally expose them for who they really are....script kiddies that have no life. Here are links to the software I have mentioned. Remember, these programs, much like Windows itself, are always being updated and improved. Check for updates often. In the case of SpyBot and Anti-Vir, I recommend a once a week check for updates.
