Title: Yahoo Smell Chat Beta Announced Post by ReeBop on Apr 2nd, 2006, 6:28am I picked up on this article today about Yahoo's upcoming Smell Chat. Sunnyvale, CA (UPA) - Yahoo! Inc. (NasdaqNM:YHOO) have announced that plans to unveil its new Yahoo Smell Chat (tm) are going according to plan. Beta versions of Smell Chat capable Instant Messengers will be available for download in the near future. To use Smell Chat, you must purchase a USB powered Yahoo Schnaz (tm) from Yahoo's website in order to recieve and transmit smells. The Schnaz requires Windows 98 SE or better. No Macintosh or Linux Schnaz support is planned at this time. The device works as tested except for one possibly major flaw. When entering into a private chat or chat room, unlike placing unwanted contacts on "ignore", you cannot ignore smells transmitted to your computer. In testing, a Asian chatroom user needed to disable the device in a hurry because of a "very foul shrimp smell" which was revealed to be the rather disgusting smelling "shrimp paste" used in Asian cuisine. Also, the strong smelling durian fruit was frequently being transmitted throughout chat rooms as well to the dismay of many. Yahoo still plans to roll out its Schanz and it's Smell Chat, but it may see a limited future if this possible major flaw cannot be worked out. |
