Wowoweeeee !!! I love this thread this is my league lol! Paranormal,superstitions, astrology, occult, horoscope, fengshui, kamasutra ...

Since the New Year is just around the corner maybe you can share to us some superstitions/ traditions you do to celebrate and welcome the New Year:

I'll start:

Jeez... I'm the resident witch and cook lol!  I do all sorts of superstitions from the Feng Shui books and magazines that I've read and was told;

This includes:
1) Having in the table 12 kinds of round fruits
2) Jumping high at midnight to increase hight lol!
3) Scatter coins all over the house
4) Make loud noises bang all caserole and honk horns and trumpets
5) Light all lighthings
6) Open all doors and windows
7) Have in the table a dish made with fish with huge scales
8) Hang 15 grapes by the door
9) Place rice and coins on the dinner table
10) Have a mirror to reflect everything on the dinning table
11) Light some fireworks
13) Have in your pockets lots of coins and shake shake shake as you hop around and dance and make noises
14) Dance around naked and make noise .... lol! I made this one up

How about you what do you do to celebrate the New Years? or any sort of superstitions yourself you can share with us  ;D

When giving a wallet or coin purse or bag, make sure to put some coins or money in it to give good luck to the receiver

When giving shoes or sandals as gift make sure to ask for a coin to the receiver to break the bad luck for both receiver and giving.  They say its like stepping on the other person.

Anyway this New Years Eve surprisingly I wasn't at the peek of my witchy insticts so I did not do any much  rituals except for

1) Hanging 15 grapes on top of the door

2) wearing polkadots/stripes

3) filling my pockets with coins and money

4) drinking wine

5) Fish on the dining table

6) Gold coins on the table

Also lighted firecrakers and honk trumpets said to drive away the evil spirits.

And now 12 days starting yesterday... Wear Red... to invoke Good Luck on everything  ;D

Let's include here the superstitious and beliefs of the people in the old days, earthly. Especially those that live in small towns or barrios. They are unbelievable and hilarious and sometimes scary, but then I do not want to get enchanted or "mamaligno" in our own language or chance a bad luck so I do what I'm told to in some of the places I visited. [smiley=roll.gif] [smiley=roll.gif] [smiley=roll.gif]

1.  In the forest, if you happened to come across a big lump on the ground while walking, either go around it or say "May I pass, please?" so that the dwarfs that live there won't get offended and make your body swell, like tummy, eyes, feet..etc..etc..!

2.  When it's your first time to visit a certain place in the province, make sure you get a bite of something... wood, stones, shells..or anything else so that the spirit will accept seeing you around them.

3.  On the 8th month of pregnancy, tie garlic around your doors and windows because it is the time, vampires or "manananggal" (as they are called locally)  when they find babies inside the womb more delicious to eat. ewwww!!

4.  After giving birth, a woman should stay in bed for at least 9 days or some kind of curse will befall her.

5.  Never walk alone on a full moon if it falls at precisely 12 midnight because by then all the bad spirits will be out rejoicing the birth of some enchanted creature.

6.  On a full moon still..make sure you place food at the base of a giant  tree so the half-horse-half human creature that lives there will not bother those that occupy the house near the tree.

7.  It is bad luck for the bride to show herself to her groom before the wedding takes place.

8.  It is bad luck for the bride to try a fitting after the wedding dress is made before a wedding.

9.  After the wedding, the bride should outrun the groom outside so she will have an upperhand in the marriage life.

10.  It is bad luck to say no if someone asked you to sponsor a child in it's baptism.

11. It is bad luck when a black cat crossed your path just when you are about to go somewhere.

12. If you see a family member without his/her head in your vision as the person is about to leave the house, stop her/him from leaving because something bad is about to happen to that person if he is allowed to leave.

13.  Put a coin in a dead person's hands and let it lie there for the duration of the funeral wake. Then retrieve it before he/she is buried under the ground. The coin will give you gambling good luck.

14.  It is bad luck for visitors to take with them anything that was at a funeral wake when they leave. That include foodstuff, playing cards, even papercups (in case you are thinking of eating them on your way out).

15. When you open a new pack of cigarette, pull the first stick and turn it upside down then return it to the pack and make sure the owner will light it last. It will make a wish come true.

Lol, earthy...these are all I can think of right now....maybe I can be back for more. ;D

LOL, so many supertitious beliefs, Witchy. Some are so funny. Haha.

Well, I remember one.LOL.

When me and my father were eating together at home in the Philippines, I began to collect some used plates so that I would get another one for the cake. He said , I should not collect anything from the table if someone single ( LOL, he was still single that time  :P ) is not yet finished eating. Why? The person can not get marry . LMAO. But look, I got a step mom.  :P

LMAO witchy, you surely are a witchy lol! I didn't know some of these like about biting a tree, about the full moon, about the cigars and about the birth and funeral myths. I did heard about those wedding "traditions".  

And about the plates Krissy, I've heard about it too, also included in the dinning myths is that when someone leaves the dinning table earlier than the rest, you should turn your plates around so he won't experience any accidents along the way.

About Babies myth:

... You should keep your baby's first hair cut in a book to make the child smart.

... Make sure that the person cutting your baby's hair for the first time is intelligent because he/she will adopt that person's intelligence.

... Keep the baby's umbilical cord hidden and after her 1st birthday bring it to a far away place so that your baby will also go places and reach far in his lifetime.

... After the childs baptism, if you are in a mass baptism, have a godparent take the child and take him out immediately. He/she should be the first to reach outside so she will go ahead of the others.

During pregnancy:

... During the period of conception, the wife should step over his husband so he would be the one to experience the pregnancy symptoms instead.

... Don't look at ugly things or else your baby will look like them.  Also if you want your child to have fair skin always be fond  of a person with dark skin tone and if you want the opposite do the reverse.

Hey, I also heard that if a pregnant woman wants to have a baby girl, all she has to do is get up from bed on the left side of your hubby while he's still asleep. If you want a boy, get up from his right side. I've heard about being able to chose the gender of your child depending on the moon's phase.... If its full moon its gonna be a boy and if its the last quarter or quarter moon its gonna be a girl .....

now if rolling over means you'll be having a gay kid hmmmmmm  that's sleeping time right? or was it during the process of making a baby?  ???

I have heard though about some dreams superstition like...

When you dreamt about falling teeth...means someone close to you, relative or loved one will die ... to counter this you have to bite on something hard like wood or to transfer the premonition bite on something alive like a plant and when it dies the relative won't anymore.

Actually yes, but it just got the spooky notion after the TV series... and 13 being attributed as a very unlucky number... even building owners didn't take a chance in having a 13th floor and skip the number 13 fearing the bad omen.

BTW...

I learned something interesting over the weekend...

anybody could react if they know about this tradition/superstition too:

In UK Christmas decorations should be put away on the 12th night... or it will bring bad luck  :o :o

After hearing this I wondered ... hmmmm ..... it could be true since look UK is a very rich and prospering country while the Philippines has been experiencing all the bad luck it can have... maybe because we keep our decorations upto February sometimes .... hmmmmm  :P

I wonder what kind of bad luck Earthy.  But then, I don't dwell too much on superstitios beliefs..it gives me headaches.  There's just so many of them.  I'm definitely sure I can't keep track of them and where to find those that are not on my lists.  Though, my beliefs nortured me that with prayers, hardwork, good sense and being good, everything will be all right and if things fall apart ..applying those attributes i mentiononed....i'm sure i'll be put back on the right path.

I have no idea about what kinda bad luck though Gracie... hard to speculate... It just made me wonder though coz well its true here in Philippines we have our decorations upto February sometimes....

It won't hurt if we do it or we don't.  Just like any other superstitions we practice sometimes ... its like prevention is better than cure thingy  ::)  

I learned about the custom after an Englishman made a comment about the christmas lights still on at Glorietta mall ... but he said though if its not part of Filipino tradition there's no need to follow it.  ;)

Yes, i understand Earthy.  We have to be cautious all the time.

I've heard that ...when you sweep the floor at night and all the dust will be thrown out outside, you will be throwing out your graces :o Instead, if you want to sweep the floor, you have to park the dust in one corner and throw it out the next morning :o

Well, Edith I usually like to remove the decorations January 2, I take down the tree first because its always the most difficult to disassemble, what I got was nagging from my mom... so since then... I wait for her to nag me into removing them  ;D lol!  She likes the decorations still up until my birthday  ;D

Yeah Gracie I've heard of that too.  Sweeping floors at night time... my sister-in-law though doesn't care! She's always cleaning the house and cleaning some more and sweeping and wiping stuffs... 'till my mom nagged her about the bad luck she was doing lol!... since then they moved out of our house lol!  JOKE! ;D

There's this superstition about trimming nails and hair....
they said if you do it at sunset or nightime you are giving your parents bad curse and bad luck...

there's this superstition about cutting the index fingers of a dead person who is also a known gambler and keep it with you when you gamble or place bets because it will give you good luck as it serves as a charm for you to always win.

Chinese New Year is January 29th, 2006, which is the year 4704 in the Lunar Calendar.

~ For good luck, the house should be cleaned before New Year Eve.

~ You should try to repay your debts by this time, so that, financial luck will come abundantly.

~ If you haven't taken a shower, don't bother. Doing so washed away your good luck. [LMAO]

~ It's a lucky sign to hear a song bird, red-colored bird, or a swallow.

~ Do not use scissors as this may cut off your fortune.

Yeah I've heard of those too Krissy.  ;)

I am not a Chinese but still we do it (I mostly) do it in the house. I'm the resident witchy (excuse me witchy  ;D ok I'm the house enchantress  ;D)

Some other additions are:

= Giving away or receiving (which is better) red envelopes or angpao with 3 lucky coins inside them or amount containing P88 or $ if you like in total.

= Giving tikoy (chinese pudding) to friends and colleagues to sweeten the relationship and make the bond lasting

= Turning on every lighthing in the house and opening every door and closets to invite money and luck to come in

For this year of the Dog:

=Red is the dominant color, so place a red table runner on the dining table or anything red on it to invite good luck, health and prosperity

= Wear red clothes or underwears if you can

= Place sweets and gold coins and rice on the table

oh deary I said I practice some but I think they're too many  ;D there's still more but I'm pressed for time just a few hours only!  ;D

Have I mentioned that it's bad luck for the groom and tne bride to see each other just before the wedding takes place? I'm thinking that maybe they will change their minds if they see each other one last time before the wedding! And it would surely make it a bad luck if that happens, eh? ;D

 Just read about this in a magazine this Sunday.  

In Greek tradition and superstition, they are not allowed to wash their hair on Sundays because doing so they believe wash away and drive all the luck and success in their life  :P

I was at another baptismal last sunday and the church was crowded with all the other babies and godparents waiting for the baptismal ceremony to begin. When it ended, I was surprised to see the father grab the baby from the mother and ran outside the church!! :o I asked the mother why, and several explained to me that it is done so that their baby will be more succesful than the other babies inside the church at that time!! [smiley=roll.gif] [smiley=roll.gif] [smiley=roll.gif] Sheez....I told them it's a crazy tradition because I saw some of the other fathers did the same. I told them "what if he tripped and drop the baby? where would the baby's future be?" Dang tradition! Sometimes I think it's silly! [smiley=silly.gif] [smiley=silly.gif] [smiley=silly.gif]

Oh, I think the priest is aware of traditions such as this because he just smiled at the scene. I think I was the only one laughing so hard though! Well..I have only heard of it at weddings, never at baptismals.

yah traditions themselves are crazy...........i was watching the spanish channel the other day and they were televising a tradition in mexico where the whole town gets involved and sit around on houses and there jus all over the place like monkeys........and they have guys kick each others asses...........even kids are fist fightin......and when they ask em what the hell its all about they dont know jack there jus there to kick ass................so for the most part............traditions exist cause they kick ass i guess

Hey, guys...have you heard that it's bad to have two weddings within the family siblings in the same year? Either get married on the same date or wait another year. They said it's badluck coz the siblings' family will always have a rivalry, like pulling it's other's luck up and down?

They said it is also a bad thing to bring anything that comes from a funeral wake. They said it would be like inviting the dead person to visit you. Yaikks! A couple of months ago, I went to the funeral of a friend. There are lots of foodstuffs there. On our way home, I passed by someone who was distributing candies and fruitjuices to the guests. I grabbed some candies and a pack of juice intending to drink it when we get to the house of another friend. We are going to play cards the whole evening. My friends saw this and would not let me leave the chapel without drinking the juice or eating the handful of candies. So I end up gulfing the juice and stuffing my mouth with candies while they waited for me. Nyahahahha!

Most families here shave their baby's head when the baby gets to be a year old but not before. They said it will make their hair grow nicer.

speaking of superstitious...i just wanna share something, i dont know how to classify this but sometimes, some events or places where i am presently involved or located seems to happened already. things just flashback in my mind that somewhere in time....in my dreams, iv been here and iv done this already....whewww kinda weird? but its true.

That's because you get flashes from your past life, manay. You should try transgressions. Do you believe in reincarnation?

i do....and i need to hear some testimonies how it happens, coz i heard there are diversities when talking about reincarnation  ::) scary to think huh
