Title: Wheels Off! - My Cycling Journal 2007
Post by ReeBop on Jan 7th, 2007, 7:27pm
It's the beginning of the New Year, and it's time to hop on the bike and ride like the wind.  No, not ride like I'm breaking wind. This will be the first Sunday night group ride of the year.  Three of my bikes are ready to ride but my fourth, the LeTour, will need to be broke down and completely lubed.  I have a frame and fork ready to paint but it is just too cold to have it turn out right.  I've made a deal with keen on the black Murray bike I have in the garage to trade it out with him if he finds it a good rider.  His old bike, that I gave him three years ago is a nice 5 speed cruiser, but a big project to bring up to quality.  I think he'll enjoy riding the Murray much better and I know I can work to make the cruiser into a nice rider.  I have yet to do a neighborhood ride, but if the weather is dry, I'll start Tuesday night and do a 3 night per week schedule.  I still have the Peugeot club racer to do as well and I'll target that for this summer.  I'll set my target again for 1500 miles and several bikes in the lineup to choose from to get them.  We leave from the downtown shop at 7 pm.  Let's ride!

Dratt, Mike! What do you need the many bikes for? And I see you have a new blog section, what's with this? And happy new year. Hehehehe! Hey, I like the valentine theme. It's cute. Good thing you have some romantic bones in your body and you did not just change it to something simply word ed like "happy valentine". Hehehehe!

When you are a cyclist, you never have enough bikes  :P  I decided with the new year, to have a separate journal for 2007.  Glad you like the colors.   8)  I'll write about tonight's ride a little later.  Now is the time to relax before sleep  ;)

Sunday night's ride went well with 60 or so of us riding through downtown Dallas on our way to Lee Harvey's for some fireside brews, burgers and chat.  I took the blue Roadmaster out and it went well except for one thing:  The bike computer won't calibrate properly anymore.  I played with it Tuesday night as well and it is just not working right anymore.  The speed is way way off.  I have a need on that bike for a computer with a backlight and wasn't in the mood to spend 50 dollars or more on a Cateye.  Cateyes are great, but a backlit one is not exactly cheap.  I went on eBay and found a nice one for 12 dollars.  It's a little bit on the large size and has more features you could ever use, but at this price and with a backlight, I can't go wrong.
Last night, I ran into a problem with my 1982 Sears FreeSpirit Greenbriar.  The bike was on the list for a complete greasing and now I'll have to move on that schedule.  After about 4 miles, the crank started making horrific noises due to the bearing being dry.  I won't be able to ride it again until that job is done.  I can do that one in stages however and just do the crank.  The LeTour needs everything done before I can take it out again.  Thank goodness the 1990 Huffy Blades is still doing ok and I'll take that one out on my night rides until the new computer comes in.  So many projects, so little time...

Here are shots of my latest bike project.  I'll call it my Beach Cruiser 2007 Project.  It is nearly complete and I've already taken it 15 miles.  Here are two "Before" pictures...

http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/YaBBImages/Cruiser_Before1.jpg
http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/YaBBImages/Cruiser_Before2.jpg

I gave a guy 10 dollars for this wreck but I saw some good features in the frame such as very good welding and lack of rust and huge scratches.  As soon as I got it home, I knew what I wanted to do with it.  I went to my favorite retro bike shop Bicycle Barn and Tom the owner fixed me up with lots of stuff.  I picked up some beach cruiser handlebars, ratcheting thumb shifters, metal pedals, hand grips, v-brake pads, new rear rim axle and bearings and a new set of balloon whitewall tires.  I picked up a very cushy gel seat, kickstand, seat pack and bike computer from Wal-Mart.  I had a nice LED flashlight to mount on the bar, a rear flasher, lock, waterbottle and cables already in my parts stock.  It took a couple of afternoons to clean and grease bearings, strip and reassemble this bike.  I did some more tuning before I took it out for its first ride last night.  Here are the "After" shots...

http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/YaBBImages/Cruiser_After1.jpg
http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/YaBBImages/Cruiser_After2.jpg

On my ride, I found the bike very very stable and easy to ride.  I'll need to tighten the shifters up a little as they tend to slip.  The flashlight, mounted with some rubber and metal hose clamps was surprisingly very bright.  I will need to replace a rear spoke and do another tuning of the rear rim.  I also will do a good cleaning to make it all shiny.  When warmer weather approches, I'll pick up some candyapple red touchup paint to fill in scratches.  All in all, a fun project and a great ride to add to my collection.  I can't wait to take it out on the Sunday Night group ride.

Here is a picture of my new bike, a Peugeot PW10-E Versallies:

http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/YaBBImages/Peugeot-pw10-w.jpg

The bike dates from 1988-89 and is in pristine condition.  This bike has been ridden less than 2 dozen times in all these years.  There are no scratches and the tires show no signs of rot.  It is as if it came right out of a time machine.  Complete with a owner's manual as well.  I will do a good cleanup, rim adjustment and a new battery for the old Cateye Micro computer on it.  This will replace the Peugeot club racer project I had planned for this year.  There is nothing like a classic Peugeot.  Superb!!!

Last night, I took out the Peugeot for the first time.  It drew a crowd and I got a lot of great compliments for it.  I didn't have a chance to clean it properly though, but it still looked good.  I had to repair a clamp to the Cateye computer sensor and replace the battery.  Fortunately, Cateye had the manual for the unit to download.  That thing is quite old, so I was surprised that they had it.  I also bought a new Cateye light kit and mounted it for the ride because I dislike riding at night without lights. At our second stop at the State and Allen, a guy walked up and immediately offered to buy the bike.  He said he had never seen a Peugeot look that good.  He was amazed that it was all original from 1988 but I had to disappoint him by saying it was not for sale.  After a few of his questions about the bike he smiled, shook my hand and congratulated my good fortune and walked off down State Street.  I have decided to keep it a "vintage" ride and not do anything to it.  I'll be gentle with it and no "out in the country" rides.  I will take it to the parks I frequent though.  I have a little more tuning to do, especially to the rims.  They have a bit of wobble to them due to long term storage conditions.  I'll have those true in short order.

Last night was the first really good evening to go for a ride in a very long time.  The weather was perfect and I left my new digs to find the White Rock Trail.  I took out the blue Roadmaster road bike and got in about 10 miles.  The Cateye LED headlamp I bought really came in handy as after dark, several parts of the trail were very dark.  I did the north section of the trail, went to just past I-635, then swung back around for home.  I am having some trouble with my Bell wireless computer however and it keeps wanting to stop working without warning.  I haven't altered anything in the setup so I have yet to figure out why it quits.  The front derailleur need adjusting as I hear a small scraping noise when I am really mashing on the pedals.  Since the move, I haven't gotten in many rides and my stamina is lacking.  I will find the time to do some more hill work this spring to bring that back up.  This weekend, if the weather holds out, I will get the Sears Freespirit into shape.  The crank bearings are dry and the bike needs a good cleanup to bring it up to standard.

We changed the structure of the Sunday night group ride and it seems much more fun.  Now, we ride well over 10 miles a night and go much further.  We rode out to White Rock Lake from downtown in a meandering route through some very nice neighborhoods.  It was also a beautiful evening to ride.  I took out the Sears FreeSpirit for the first time after I had the crank rebuilt and it was smooth.  The crank did loosen up after 20 miles, but that is not a surprise after placing the new crank spindle and packing new bearings.  Because I rode the entire length of the Katy Trail (a converted railroad route to downtown Dallas), and rode from my condo, I got in 27 miles for the day.  Not bad on such an old bike.  Next Sunday, I'll take out the Peugeot again as I have been asked when the group will see it again.  I just bought tire strips for it to guard against punctures and will install those next weekend as well as another truing of the rims.

Last night, I rode in the Ride of Silence at White Rock Lake, Dallas.  There were several hundred riders there and we did the 10-11 mile loop around the lake in complete silence with police escort.  We were quite a site!  There were a lot of road bikes there, so my red cruiser seemed to stand out from the crowd.  The Ride of Silence is a memorial ride to honor those who died or suffered due to bicycle accidents with motor vehicles.  The official website is http://www.rideofsilence.org.  It was a gentle ride and the weather was wonderful.  I chose the red cruiser for the ride to do a shakedown before our Sunday cycling group's ride in Ft. Worth on Saturday.  The crank is just a tad loose and I need to mount a new red warning flasher on the back.  I'll get some new pictures up soon of it as I added a rear rack and new candy apple red LED headlamp.

Sorry I haven't written much of late, but with the weather poor here for the last 2 months or so, I can't ride like I used to.  Things may be shaping up and the rain does appear to be tailing off.  I will be launching a bicycling forum / site in the next week as it looks like I will be managing the Sunday night riding group.  I also want to restart the Dallas Critical Mass ride as well and this new site will do everything from a general cycling board and manage these projects.
On the bike front, I've gotten the 75 Schwinn LeTour in better shape and made a list of things that need to be done to make it a daily rider.
1.  The bottom bracket needs to be rebuilt.  I can feel a bearing issue and maybe the whole thing needs to be replaced.  I'll have to take it to the shop (Bicycle Barn, West Dallas) for that as I don't have the right sized crank puller for it.
2.  New Chain.  I can feel that the chain has had better days because it does not feel as "fluid" in motion as it should be.  Old chains can stretch over the years and this one was recovered when I took the rust off the bike.
3.  Recabling.  Those cables really need to be changed for more fluid shifting and braking.  The housings are orignal and Schwinn gray, but I will put some nice new black ones on there to match the bike better.  I'm not going for a complete strip and restore here, but bringing an old classic back to ridability.

I've already changed the seat on it to something more comfortable.  The old Huffy Blades seat fits just fine and the Schwinn Gel cover I have looks great.  I also need to adjust the Schwinn water bottle down a tad.  The rims need a good regreasing and I can do that on my own.  I will schedule a trip to the shop this weekend and a pickup the following weekend.  This was a fine bike in its day and can be again with those fixes.

We had a great ride Sunday night and our group was of a good size.  Things are holding together ok but there was grumbling about our route and how fast we rode.  I may take the lead or ask for volunteers every week to guide the ride on our route.  I'm still not too familiar with riding in downtown Dallas to choose a fun route to the locations we choose.  I was in Chicago on business all last week and I did not get far with the new BicycleFest.org website.  I'll be working on the bones of the site this week.  It will be more of a look like ChatFest.org, but with a software package called Joomla.  I may even move ChatFest.org to Joomla because there are features I want in a forum / portal site that MKPortal and phpBB seem to be lacking.  I took out my recent purchase last night, a very pretty metallic green Magna Great Divide.  For $40, it rode fine but shifts rather hard.  I may or may not be able to adjust that out.    I also added my usual kit to the bike that includes a water bottle, pump, bell, lights and a seat pack.  I may take that one out for my ride tonight to work out that shifting problem and I'll take some new pictures to post soon.

Due to being ill most of August, I don't have much to report on my cycling efforts of late.  I was able to ride a little though and I believe my year totals are between 900 and 1000 miles.  I have not done any rural rides this year and probably won't have time to.  I have enjoyed the evening rides through the fancy neighborhoods of Dallas however.  I can easily get in 15 miles in an evening with no traffic trouble.
I will be blogging more about my next bike project, a 1984 Schwinn World Tour road bike I picked up for $10.  It was a great deal and the bike is in amazing shape for being roughly stored for many years.  Stay tuned!

I've started taking pictures of my bikes as I take them out, but I have found a possible irritation on my Treo phone.  It tends to cut off on the sides, so I'll be posting them soon as I learn how to take better pictures.  The LeTour is a great ride now!  I've put on 90 miles so far this week and have taken the LeTour past 100 for the year.  I still need to do those hub bearings in the rims though, but it is not a pressing issue.  I also want to work some lube into the pedals as I think they are the source of a "crinkling" noise when I really mash on the pedals.

I'll be working on the blue Roadmaster this weekend to get it back into riding condition with new tires.  I will not keep it in that configuration though as I have a 2 stage plan of changing the layout of the bike from a hard core all purpose bike to a heavyweight long distance road bike.  First, I'll change out the handlebar, stem, brake levers and shifters to a traditional road layout.  Next, I'll do the bottom bracket and deraileurs and replace them with road bike components.  Currently, they have a nice Shimano GS100 layout but that is more for a hybrid / mountain bike.

I also have nearly all the parts on order for restoration of my 1984 Schwinn World Tour.  This $10 purchase is in decent condition and will be getting a slew of new parts, some upgrades (pedals with toe clips) and my usual assortment of accessories (LED lights, computer, water bottle cages).  That bike is quite light and nearly the same weight as my Peugeot.  It should make for a good road ride.

This bike is a relatively new one that I picked up this summer.  It is no more than 3 years old and was hardly ridden.  I really like the lime green metallic paint.  It is a decent ride and I'll use it for questionable weather.

The Guilt and the Peugeot

Have you ever worried about using something you treasure?  If you wrecked it, would you feel real bad about it?  That is how I feel about my white Peugeot.  I have ridden it 125 miles this year and each time I take it out, I have a huge smile on my face as it is glorious to ride.  In the back of my mind though is "what if someone hits me?" or "what if I have to lay it down on the pavement?".  This bike is irreplaceable due to its condition.  Therefore, I've kept my eyes open for a second Peugeot to ride before the year was out.  I have found it.

Cruising the Bikes section of Craigslist, I found a Peugeot that was nearly exactly like mine for about $75.  I e-mailed the guy and heard no response for days, so I wrote it off as being too late with my response to his ad.  Suprisingly, I received a reply stating that it was mine for the taking.  I rushed over to his house to see it.  The bike was nearly identical except it had been ridden much much more than mine.  There were some scratches, but not a lot of them.  It was incredibly dirty and needed new tires and handlebar tape for certain.  It was too good to be true, and I took it home to compare to mine.  Except for differences in the pedals, water bottle cages and the seat post bolt, it was identical.  Time to get to work on it...

First, I started with a good frame cleaning.  This thing had a gummy film all over it and the white came right out.  I'll follow with a polywax later on.  I purchased some new Michelin tires (should a Peugeot have anything else?) and some white cork handlebar tape for a great price.  I have a pump, computer and lights already in my parts bin.  I still need to soak the brake lever covers overnight to get the gummy dirt off of them and rewrap the bar and mount the new tires.  I noticed some chain rust when cleaning the frame, so I may replace it.  I am awaiting a new black gel seat in the mail that will arrive any day.  It should take a few rides to get it tuned to where I want it.  Pictures will come shortly of both of my Peugeots.  This new arrival will get some serious riding time.

Here are pictures of my favorite bikes, my Peugeots.  These are 1988(?) model PG10Ws (Versallies) 12 speed bikes which formed Peugeot's midgrade line.  They have good Shimano components and the frame is a nice lightweight one for its day.  Not a professional racing bike, but far better than their entry level bikes and can be enjoyed for long distances.  I have them adjusted into more of a "comfort touring" mode.  The first two of are my mint condition example.  All is original on this bike except for the Cateye light kit.  The Cateye computer on it is original from the late 80's.

http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/PeugeotA-1.jpg
http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/PeugeotA-2.jpg

These two are of my latest aquisition.  Not as in "new" condition, but still an attractive bike.  I've replaced the seat, put on new Michelin road tires, new spongy bar tape, added a light kit, flick bell and seat pack and a wireless computer.  This bike was very dirty but cleaned up well.  The chain cleaning went well and feels tight, so I won't replace it at this time.

http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/PeugeotB-1.jpg
http://www.1freeworld.net/groups/PeugeotB-2.jpg

The first one will see limited mileage in the 100-200 mile range for the year.  The second I bought to ride much much more and will become one of my two main "road bikes" for the year.

My current strategy is to ride each bike 100 miles for the year with my green FreeSpirt, second Peugeot and my Roadmaster seeing the most mileage of the group.

Here are pictures of the World's Greatest Roadmaster Mt. Fury.  This bike has been ridden over 3500 miles in the years I have had it.  I purchased it in 2002 and was my first bike when I got back into cycling.  The Weinmann rims (with Shimano hubs and skewers)are now sporting new 26 X 2.0 smooth road tires as I wore out the Continental Town & Country tires that were on it before.  I also finally got the wireless computer on it working properly as the Cateye LED headlamp was interfering with the signal.  Bell has a much improved model that I use on my new Peugeot but I'll stay with this one on here for now.  This bike will undergo a complete overhaul as the bottom bracket is worn out.  The bike currently has a Shimano GS100 group that Trek and Giant used in the 1990's for their mountain and city bikes.  I will be upgrading the bike to a Shimano Biopace road bike group complete with drop handlebars.  The current yellow extensions will go on the lime green bike pictured in an earlier post.  I hope to have this complete by December.  The bike is still ridable as long as I don't "mash" the pedals too hard.  Flexing on the bottom bracket is making the chain jump which is very annoying.  Still, I have about 100 miles on it for the year and it is a smooth rider.

Here are pictures of my early 80's (1982?) Sears FreeSpirit Greenbriar.  The bike is complete with the original Shimano Positron rear deraileur.  I have about 155 miles on this bike for the year.  This year, I replaced the headlamp with a 5 LED unit which is quite bright.  I've also changed out the original seat with a springy Bell seat due to cracking in the vinyl.  I've kept it though and placed it on a shelf.  The bike is a heavy yet smooth rider due to the bottom bracket being completely rebuilt and lubed.  The dark green paint is original and the decals are in decent condition.  Maybe it is not worth a lot, but it is a great ride and easy to own.  The price was unbeatable as it was a freebie saved from the scrap heap.  I found a source for a chrome rack for the back, but since this bike is so well known for the wood rack, I think it would be wrong to change it now.

My riding so far this fall is going quite well.  I really enjoy the evening rides through the Park Cities area of Dallas.  Soon, there will be Christmas lights out to add to the enjoyment of the ride.  So far, I have encountered only 2 chilly evenings but rode with no problems at all.  I've started a Wednesday night riding group which so far consists of two people.   :D  I will be working on getting more people out for that one though.  I decided to keep the mileage on that one to about 10 miles per ride.

I hope to have my new Peugeot city/beach cruiser project finished this weekend.  I'll be posting pictures of it as soon as it is done.  This bike has replaced the red cruiser in my lineup and Trish, the new owner of the bike really likes it a lot.  That bike has found a good home.

I've bought sets of some nice used 26" rims to use on my projects.  One set will replace those rims on my lime green bike as they really creaked a lot on a chilly night ride.  Those rims in turn will end up on my red 5 speed Magna cruiser project.  That bike needs every piece of chrome replaced but at this time, I will not be painting it.  When that bike is done, I'll post the story behind the bike.

I have received the bottom bracket converter courtesy of Harris Cycles / Sheldon Brown.  This is the key part of my World's Greatest Roadmaster Mt. Fury project.  I may wait until January to do that one however as I'm getting rather busy as the end of the year approaches.  Until next time...

The new rims are working great on the Lime Green bike.  I will need to get used to shifting the bike as the freewheel on the bike has 7 cogs instead of 5 like before.  The old rims went to the rust bucket 5 speed cruiser and they look great on it.  That bike is nearly ready to ride as it is but I'll start replacing the rusty parts on it soon.  The Schwinn tires that came with the new rims also went on the 5 speed.  They are not too knobby and should work out well.  They look good on it too.  Time to tally my mileage as I feel I'm getting closer to my goal.

It was cold tonight.  Really cold with the breeze blowing.  I did go out on the ride though.  Unfortunately, nobody else went on the ride so I rode alone.  I took out the yellow LeTour and got in 26 miles.  I did wrap up pretty good though, so it wasn't so bad.  Besides gloves, ear muffs are really important.  I think my pilot light would blow out if I didn't have them.  Something good came out of tonight's ride though as I went over the 1500 mile mark for the year.  I only needed another 12 miles, so anything extra is great.  It does make me wonder how many more I would have gone if I wasn't sick for 2 whole months this year.  It is now time to put the LeTour up for the year.  I won't be able to ride this next week due to a business trip and I'll miss it for sure.  See you on the road on my green Free Spirit next Sunday!

As I have rode a lot the past three days, I will rest my body today and tally up my miles for the year.  With the 10 bikes I rode this year, the total is 1622 miles.  Being ill for 2 months and  the time I took to move, I am very very happy with the result.  Last year, I was only able to do 1250 miles on the three bikes I owned.  Now, I'm up to ten bikes and may add a couple to that this year.  We'll see.  I'd like to have a 3-speed in my collection as well as a Murry Jet Fire cruiser bike.  I also have an old Peugeot frame I would like to build up.  As for my favorite rides, I do like my Peugeots but the Rust Bucket is the most satisfying as it needed the most work to bring it back.  I get really good comments on that one on how it turned out.  I'm just a new crank away from a 100 percent restoration on it.   I have a new Peugeot city cruiser to finish in the spring and a complete rebuilt of the Roadmaster Mt. Fury is coming up.  I have a nice gravity rack in the condo to hold my 2 "show bikes" and I'm looking to round out my tool kit in 2008.  Yes, a bike stand would be very nice indeed.

As for my riding venues this year, I've found all new fun places to ride that are not too far away.  I didn't do any long distance rides this year however, so I want to plan at least a couple of those this coming year.  I found that cycling in Ft. Worth was lots of fun especially knowing that the commuter train is cheap to ride and you can easily take your bike on board.  I will plan on a few more rides over there and take people with me for sure.

As easily as I got past my 1500 mile goal for the year, I will set next year's goal to 2000 miles.  Hopefully, I won't get illnesses like I did in 2007 and can keep riding all 12 months.  Hmmm, I wonder what I'll call my 2008 cycling journal?  I can think of that over a pint of Guinness this evening.  Well, maybe two.

Happy New Year to you all!

Happy Cycling!
