Title: The Adventures Of Being Alive
Post by teagirl on Dec 15th, 2008, 3:13pm

I have just realised the last few days that I have truly come full circle. I used to haunt the pages of this forum, then left it without a word. Now I've returned --- a little bit older, a little bit bolder and hopefully, with fingers crossed, a little bit wiser.

Life has been good to me. So is Love and Friends and the Almighty. And my writing skills could use a little bit of honing, but what the heck, I'm happy.

So happy, I could want for nothing.

Title: Flower Power
Post by teagirl on Dec 16th, 2008, 12:33am
I am in constant amazement at the wondrous blooms that add colour to every garden, frontyard, roundabout and park here in Wellie. Fuschias and lavenders braved the autumn chill and the winter touch; but when September heralded spring, jolly good daffodils and classic tulips added a touch of festivities in the air.

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/PC122258.jpg

Currently, we are in the middle of summer, and the riotous blooms of deep and pale hued roses are everywhere, rendering the atmosphere glorious in its rosy scent. The pansies, too, are showing off with their vivid colors; but who can ignore the deep purple blooms of the hydrangeas, or their pale rosy tint depending on the pH of the soil in the garden?

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/PC132263.jpg

I count myself truly blessed to enjoy these favourite blooms outside my bedroom window, so blessed that I am unable to resist cutting a few flowering stems to adorn the dinner table.

linear, too linear:
traveling in
a straight line,
cutting across
a threshold
for god knows
how fast.
yet stem to stem unfurls
the thought of you
like little cloud bursts
i tried to grasp;
as it floats across
and disappears
like thought is lost
in the midst of waking.
so like the dream
i dream of you
when i sleep;
so very like you
and the heart
i could not keep.

Mrs NJ! I'm glad you like my flowers. I have wanted to try my hand at gardening for the longest time; and well, it certainly helps that The Tall One loves to putter around the garden, too. You know, I can't wait to see the "fruits of our labour," --- we are growing tomatoes, courgettes, and chilli peppers this summer!

I am looking forward to see your tomatoes, courgettes and chilli peppers.... ;D  You have no idea.  Take picture of each phase.

I am glad you and The Tall One have things in common.   ;)

Gardening is fun & stress-free.

Yep! I have taken pictures of our little vegetable patch. We also have a lemon tree growing right in the center of the backyard and its flowering already! Can't wait for the fruits of our labours. Haha.

Do you have any gardening books to recommend?

Your lemon tree is about to bear fruits...make sure there are lots of bees to pollinate...You very fortunate to have a lemon tree...I always wanted a lemon tree...how big is your lemon tree?  does it survive the cold?

I have lots of gardening books....let me check when i go home.   I always like to buy couple of them to see what ideas they have while gardening....

Hi Teagirl...sorry for the delay.

There are couple of garden books.  But you need to find out what zone you are in my is zone 6a.  Different zone have different planting season...

you can check out The American Horticultural society Encyclopedia of gardening, Burpee, Smith & Hawken...Do New Zealand have their own gardening books.

I recommend to plant those that are natives to your country...its okay to plant different kinds but than you have to check out what kind of soil, how long is your summer & spring and so on...

Annie, I have been taking pictures of our little veggie patch in the backyard. I am happy to report that they the tomato plants are growing big and strong and have counted at least 10 itty bitty tomato fruits. :)

Earlier today we planted hydrangeas in the backyard and when I looked again this afternoon, they didn't look so happy but I hope they will thrive as I do love hydrangeas.

I've taken out a lot of gardening books from the library, too, but most of the time I rely on The Tall One's knowledge and experience about plants as he has been gardening for a longer time that I have.  What do you know about planting lettuce? Or herbs? Any wonderful suggestions would be most welcomed!

Any herbs are easy to grow.  Make sure choose a sunny side window or sunny area and plant in a pot.  It is better to plant in a pot.

I remember growing lettuce when I was a kid...it was during spring that we start planting it and we use these paper covering to protect the frost....but make sure you check it everyday...i recommend check it morning and evening.

what kind of herbs do you like to grow?   There are many and I recommend to plant at least 4 of your favorite kind....

For your hydrangea...did you water the plant yet & is it sunny?  best to water it in the morning than when it is really hot...never water plants during the afternoon...only morning or late evening is the best.  otherwise you can kill the plant.  can you take a picture...I want to see how deep or how sunny the area is...

I am looking forward to your tomatoes...I enjoy looking at it...and you should post it here...each phase...hey you never know others might want to learn also.

I want to plant lavender...maybe next season.  I bought some seeds.

Ask the tall one what zone you in....

I have already successfully grown parsley. In fact, parsley is the first plant I've tried planting and success has gone to my head. Now I want to venture out and try other herbs like rosemary, sage, etc.

The Tall One's attempt at lavender failed. We will try again soon, however. Oh --- my chilli peppers are growing. I have 3 fruits now. :)

Title: One Night In Bangkok
Post by teagirl on Dec 22nd, 2008, 10:51pm

I can't help but sing the lines of the song, "One Night In Bangkok," inside my head as I learned how to play chess this weekend. The Tall One is an avid chess player and is organising a chess tournament at his school as a jumping ground for kids' awareness in how to resolve conflict the non-violent way. I have always marvelled at people who play chess, thinking that winning it deeply involves a lot of patience, cunning and strategy and I was right. As I learned different chess moves and concentrating so hard to try to at least prolong each chess game before The Tall One cries "check mate", I am inevitably hooked to the game. I bug The Tall One to play at least one game with me and he does give in, thinking perhaps that maybe this will be the game when I stop calling the chess pieces knight instead of "horse" and rook instead of "tower." Haha.

I have not won any game yet, but I am proud to say that I have surprised The Tall One in my sense of self-preservation, defence, and length of play before he gets to my king. One day, I can beat him and chess but for the meantime, I have to practice and learn from my mistakes. Kinda like life, isn't it?

I do love the fragrance of rosemary but unfortunately, I don't like to eat lamb. It's just been recently that I have learned to eat venison and I'm really not such a big fan.

You still can plant chilli peppers and give the fruits away, if you want. For me, its the joy of planting and growing that makes me a fan. Oh, yes...basil! I have to get that as well.

Cat-nip? Vincent van Cat is the world's pickiest eater. Nothing but catfood for him. Haha.

What is venison?  I have to google that later when I go home.   if you love the fragrance and you enjoy planting...you have nothing to lose.   Yes I agree it is the joy of planting and growing... :)

Try basil...try the easy herbs first before the uncommon ones...

I think Vincent van Cat will lovvvvvvvve the catnips....it is a drug for them.... ;D

Title: HNY
Post by teagirl on Jan 2nd, 2009, 12:55am
MC and HNY to everyone.

I am still a bit tired, having spent a lot of late nights experiencing the authentic Kiwi Christmas and New Year. Certainly the celebrations had been quiet and low-key. It was also quite odd not to hear any firecrackers popping and lighting up the sky on New Years' Eve, but then again, there is a move to ban all firecrackers here in Kiwiland as they spook the livestock, especially the horses; as what happened during Guy Fawke's celebration.

I had my first taste of roasted lamb for Christmas as well, and when at first I truly didn't relish the idea of eating Dolly, after a bite of the tender and succulent meat, I thought it was not so bad. For dessert, I had the quintessential Pavlova topped with fresh strawberries, cherries and blueberries. Speaking of blueberries, the Tall One and I have made plans to go blueberry picking at a farm sometime soon. I would love to do that as I've never done any berry picking in my whole life.

I am truly enjoying my Kiwi summer amidst the riotous red Pohutokawa blooms but I still prefer the nippy cold autumn and winter chill. It is easier to warm up than to cool down.

Has Santa been kind to you, friends? How was your holiday season?

Santa was kind to me Doki, though i've been experiencing ache here and there caused by daily carrying and chasing my son.  Luigi is 1 year 7 months and super active.  I have the help but seems she's giving all the works to us!!! I wonder why!  So Greg and I ended up dating in the The Terraces in Ayala...which was so beautiful...to take some rest.  All in all...it was fun bonding with them.

Happy New Year Doki!!!  All the best for 2009.

On the 27th we went to our in-laws to celebration Christmas.

I loved that book, too, K. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Right now, I am reading White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. Adiga won the Booker Award for 2008 for this book and so far I am not disappointed. It's very interesting and quite a good read. "The Hour I First Believed" turned out to be quite boring and so all over the place. Quite a disappointment really, considering that "I Know This Much Is True" is quite a very good book.

I have heard about The Terraces, Gracie. I left Cebu before that was open to the public. I do miss the malls and the shopping experience there but I don't think I want to exchange my forests and greenery for the concrete jungle anymore. These days, instead of malling, I am gardening or reading a book in the park. But yeah, I'd like to go back to Cebu one day and shop til I drop and then come home to Wellington to my peace and quiet. Haha. I miss you, Gracie.

Title: One Summer Day
Post by teagirl on Jan 8th, 2009, 8:21pm

On our way to Otaki where fat, red strawberries allegedly grew in abundance (I wrote allegedly because all the strawberries were picked out and what I thought was strawberry picking day turned out to be plum picking day!), we made lot of stopovers and took a lot of photos.

There are several roads to Otaki, but we took the long and winding one to get to the top of Paekakariki hill in order to enjoy the view of Kapiti coast. It was windy and chilly but you can't beat Wellington on a good day, as the local folks would say.

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/lookout.jpg

About half an hour later, we stopped by the roadside to enjoy --- guess, what --- ice cream! And it wasn't just any old ice cream, too! It was freshly made from all kinds of berries and fruits and if the customer wants, chilli pepper can be added into the concoction as the ice cream maker churns it all into a pinkish gooey, sticky, sweet, and hot (quite hot, spicy hot) blob on top of ice cream cones. I was brave enough to try a concoction of (boysenberry, raspberry, mango and chilli pepper) but The Tall One made a safer choice without the chilli. Soon I was eating out of his ice cream cone, preferring the sweet un-'chillied' taste.

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/chillipeppericecream.jpg

How can you tell if a certain food shop (or in this case, ice cream shop) is really, really good? Simple. Local folks patronise the place. In this next picture, we met Diesel who loves his Strawberry and Cream that he gobbled it up like there's no tomorrow!

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/dogdayafternoon.jpg

Soon, Diesel was eyeing our ice cream cones and who could resist those soulful puppy dog eyes? Not I! In exchange for a scratch on the head, I gave my chilli pepper ice cream to Diesel and he was my slave forever!!!

To cap off a long road trip, we took a detour to Queen Elizabeth Park where the cousin and the niece enjoyed the beach.

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/beachscene.jpg

It wasn't a Strawberry Fields Forever day but it was certainly a wonderful Good Day Sunshine of a Summer in Otaki, Wellington.

Title: Harvest for the World
Post by teagirl on Jan 18th, 2009, 11:53am

I've been away for a long-ish holiday. The Tall One and I went to the Wairarapa Coast for some hill climbing which afforded us a sweeping view of the sea, the Castlepoint lighthouse and a sight of a rare daisy. Photos will be coming soon --- I thought I'd post first our most recent adventure and that is blueberry picking on the hillside of Akatarawa.

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/harvesttime.jpg

Acres and acres of shrubs greeted us and I was just amazed at the galaxy of blueberries begging to be picked!

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/PYO.jpg

After what seemed like forever in the afternoon sun, The Tall One and I have managed to put 1.5 kilos of blueberries in our buckets. I can't tell, however, how many blueberries didn't make it into the bucket!

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/blueberrybucket.jpg

It was quite a tedious process --- picking blueberries on a hot summer afternoon --- what better way to cap the day than having vanilla ice cream topped with freshly picked mixed berry jam and blueberries?

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m215/flowerinthecity/AC1%20Forum/blueberryicecream.jpg

And of course, there was a frantic rush of baking blueberry muffins that night. Yummy!

He can bake? Oh wow, that's very impressive Teamay, you're one lucky girl.  ;) I miss baking. It's been a while since I last baked. Don't have a nanny yet, that's why I've no time to do so. But it's near summer time again, maybe when Kia leaves to spend vacation in her Grannies' place I could do some baking. I do miss it.

The Short One & The Tall One @ Lake Ferry

I have been all over the North Island and (well, not to Auckland) but every chance we get, The Tall One and I would pack our bags and hit the road to see more of Kiwiland. It has been pretty exciting for me, as certainly, each place that The Tall One and I have been to has a distinctly different colour and character to it. Recently, The Tall One and I went camping at Lake Ferry in the Wairarapa Region (my favourite place) and miraculously, I survived without indoor plumbing.

But when its quiet and I'm all alone, stirrings of homesickness would gnaw its way into my heart and before long, the emotions would swell into strong pangs of yearning for that which is familiar.

I miss Cebu. I miss the colour, the flavour, the character, the people I have left behind, and all that is dear to me. But I choose to embark on a different adventure now, a different journey, an altogether unfamiliar terrain which I can only hope to afford me courage, strength and fortitude. I heard it once said that your choices dictate the life you lead. I couldn't agree more with that.

But with my choices, comes also the power of what I can make of my life. The reality is, I can have anything I want. My life is unfolding. The canvas is empty. I can choose my future. I miss Cebu but I  choose this life. I choose love. I choose laughter. I choose this adventure.

I am glad to hear the tall one is bringing you to places and new adventures Teagirl.  I love the picture...the vivid blues...and the silhouette of course.  Never seen anything that blue before...is beautiful.

Teagirl I know how much you miss your birthplace, the people you left behind but it is still there...and will always be there...just a phone call away and you will hear your family & friends.  I venture out on my own when I was in my 20s even though I didn't go far...I miss my parents cooking, love and etc but knowing I can always called them I feel at ease.

Soon your canvas will be painted brightly and vividly...new culture, custom, food,...you create it because you are right...you have choices...someone to share the adventure with...so don't feel alone...you are not alone actually.  You are with someone who is dear to you...

Thank you so much for sharing these statements Teamay. I need just this kind of motivation especially at this point in my life. (winks) I guess my canvass is empty now too. And I am looking forward to filling it with a whole new rainbow of colors. I know it's not gonna be easy, but I have faith. I choose forgiveness. I choose understanding. I choose healing. I choose love. I choose happiness.

Annie, my yearning for my childhood home and the people I have left behind is eloquently expressed in the book I am reading at present titled "Translation of Beauty" by Mia Yun, a Korean immigrant who now lives in New York. I think you will love the book, too, as it touches the core of all of us immigrants and speaks of a clear voice the pangs of longing we have felt for the place we once called "home."

Thank you for the encouragement and for the wonderful guide and help about carbon footprint in Facebook! Cheers!

My dearest K! Such wonderful choices for yourself. Life is quite exciting, isn't it, when you know you are living it with every ounce of positive outlook you can muster. It won't be easy but it's just extra-ordinarily wonderful when you "become" instead of staying in the ways of "being."

I don't even know what that means but it's a song, I assure you. So, how are the folks in this Free World? If the question is hurled back at me, I would say I am fantastic!

A lot of things are changing for me and the changes are great! Mother Earth in this side of the world is also changing it's dress---preferring golds, reds, yellows and coppers and there's a distinct change in the air. Summer is gone, folks, and it's time for wonderful Autumn once again. My favourite season.

I'm fantastic too Doki not because there's autumn here...i'm just happy because you are.  I will continue to pray that hopefully in God's time you can pursue your dream there - the dream that was put on hold for the tiem being.  Keep it up Doki!!!

I usually have time early in the morning before time ticks 8 Doki, but lately, i didn't mind getting on line thinking that you are busy with your work.  Anyway, starting tomorrow, i'll be on line at least an hour before work starts.

Miss you too! I can't wait to hear all  the good news.

God bless you always.

Hello.

I am so speechless here. All I could say is "wow, wow". Then I can't help to self pity again.

I am always a fan of you, teagirl. I wish, I was as wise and strong as you, so I could advance as far as you are now. I still keep my hope though, despite myself getting older and older.

(finaly, I've spoken something)

Hello, Norkay!

I'm sorry if I have just read your post here. Somehow, I have forgotten that this forum existed. Haha. How are you? Good to see you!
