Title: Mstislav Rostropovich Dies at 80 Post by ReeBop on Apr 27th, 2007, 7:06pm Rostropovich was more than a solo cellist and orchestra conductor. He was one of the greatest cellists of our age and was internationally known for his stance in support of Soviet dissidents such as the great Russian writer, Alexander Solzhenitsyn. He exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974 and became an icon as musical director and conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra for many years. His work will live on in his many recordings and performances. The memory of his solo performance at the Berlin Wall in 1989 brought to focus both facets of his life: maestro and dissedent. RIP, Maestro Slava... [smiley=angel.gif] |
