Title: Re: MONEY TALK! Post by okasantina on Dec 13th, 2005, 6:22pm My son`s 8 yr old classmates are now gettin their allowance. Should i start too? How much should i give? Should i give it daily or weekly? ??? One friend told me ... "if you want to teach your child how to handle money, you have to give him some money to handle. Do you think at his age he will learn the basics of spending and saving? ::) I know sometimes it came to my thought to give him his regular allowance - not so little that he can save that he gets tempted to buy whatever he fancies. But how much is the right for him? If he brings a packed lunch and snack to school everyday, then just give an amount to cover emergency calls to be made at the phone booth, some candies or little treats like stickers or cards, and maybe a drink....Well yeah...sometimes my son gets envy w his classmates cuz they brought money in class...and i just told him ... why u have ure lunch pack w u...and goin to canteen will waste ure time cuz of heavy lines....so its better not to bring..but sometimes i find it so pity..so i gave him P20 a day and that depends to my mood ... lol ;D though usually i dont tolerate it cuz he is only 8...It has something to do w the age??? Then one time imake a trip to school canteen and gosh i was so surprised that the prices were so high :o . The goin rate for allowances these days depends on the child`s needs and the length of time my child spends in school. Sometimes, my son would ask for more duh he has his lunch packs or merienda in school.... i think 10 to 20 pesos a day is enough...well its not everyday that i gave him ...I never yet give it daily allowance to him.. I want him to be responsible yes to keep track of his expenses, but that is when i give it weekly eh. Regardless of the amount i give, how often i should give? i`ll make it sure he will know the importance of saving. ;D :) ;) |

Title: Re: MONEY TALK! Post by Wicked_Witch on Dec 14th, 2005, 1:49am Tins...I started giving my kids money when they reached high school age. When they were younger I taught them save by way of piggy banks. I don't think 8-year olds can handle so much money already. They are still easy to manipulate by smarter and older ones. Anyway, now I give each my kids their weekly allowance and it's not just for school days but also for their weekend expenses. If they spend all the money before their next allowance is due, I make sure they go without giving them any more money till the next time. Aside from fare money, I count how much they would spend for lunch and snacks and I give them a little extra. |

Title: Re: MONEY TALK! Post by Gracia on Dec 14th, 2005, 3:24am ]Tinatins, in my son's school, his classmates are having their daily allowances already. It's normal for a child to get envy to buy this and that. I am so firm not to give him allowance yet. Since my husband is working in that school, so i told him, "if you're hungry and you don't feel like eating your packed merienda, you can call your Papa and ask him to buy for you". And if my son is buying things that i find it so very unnecessary, then i have to scold the father. In your case, if you think you can trust your son about what to buy and what's not to buy, then you can give him a little i guess. |

I cant trust him yet, thats why it depends only on my mood to give him or not to give him at all...sometimes he go to his Lolo and ask for money...then i talk to my dad not to give him any amount cuz he will get used to it...i dont even like my son asking for money to any one of their Tita`s or Tito`s...even told him u should work for it in everytime u want money from them. And it helps so now everytime he asks for money he see to it that all his assignments or work like cleaning his room...arranging his things are done. ;D |

Well Miss Cooch why dont you just skip on over and do my taxes then if you think it is so easy. The CPA I use even said mine take time to do. When I left him a message I was gonna do it myself this year he sent me a text message saying....GOOD LUCK. I have to deal with more than just the simple deductions. I have the software but you still have to figure out what goes where. I have trust funds, contracts, over contributions to IRAs and 401k's, and some dividends from a few stocks. And thats not even including all the other expenses and income I have with my partnership and my other part time business. Like I said it would help if I was more organized but I usually always have to pay anyway so I not very motivated to even file. But I did complete them last night. I started Saturday and finished Thursday night. I not saying they cant be done..what I am saying its a hastle and I not like to do it. But next year cooch I will be looking for you. ;D |
