I don't know zilch about the stock market and I'm seriously contemplating about investing in mutual funds. I've been doing some reading but as usual, I do have another stupid question because obviosuly Google doesn't have the answer to everything.

Can anyone just buy shares of stock from any company regardless? Say, I'm interested in a U.S. owned-based company; what about taxes and stuff?

Sound advice, anyone?
