Title: Laptops to be Required by College Students Post by ReeBop on Mar 1st, 2006, 6:41pm I came across this story on Slashdot. Indiana State University will begin requiring freshmen students to have a notebook computer in posession. The Lenovo ThinkPad ( what used to be IBM's computer line) will be the standard laptop for the university. While I think that students will be getting a good deal because of this, I also think that if a student chooses another brand, they should be allowed to do so. I certainly hope that wireless capability is available throughout their university grounds. As for systems software, if this means that they will require Microsoft Windows to be used, I will not be happy with the fact that Microsoft's Windows monopoly will get another boost. We'll see how this and other colleges implement this educational strategy. Here is a link to the article: http://www.tribstar.com/features/local_story_059211434.html?keyword=topstory Apple has been for a long time, a big supporter of campus computing. How will they take the news? Linux has grown by leaps and bounds through universities worldwide. There are alternatives and they should be made welcome as well. Instead of a standard system, how about a list of minimum features needed for a campus computer instead? [smiley=soapbox.gif] |
