Title: Scripture Reading -----February 2005
Post by gracia on Feb 1st, 2005, 2:25am
Mark 5:21-43..........February 1, 2005

When Jesus had crossed again (in the boat) to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea.  One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward.  Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, "My daughter is at the point of death.  Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.  He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him.  There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years.  She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had.  Yet she was not helped but only grew worse.  She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak.  She said,  "If i but touch his clothes, I shall be cured."  Immediately her flow of blood dried up.  She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.  Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the corwd and asked, "Who has touched my clothes?"  But his disciples said to him, "You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, 'Who touched me?"  And he looked around to see who had done it.  The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached with fear and trembling.  She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth.  He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."  While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue officials house arrived and said, "Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?"  Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid; just have faith."  He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.  When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and waiting loudly.  So he went in and said to them, "Why this commotion and weeping?  The child is not dead but asleep."  And they ridiculed him.  Then he put them all out.  He took along the child's father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was.  He took the child by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum,"  which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise!"  The girl, a child of twelve, arouse immediately and walked around.  (At that) they were utterly astounded.  He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

How faithful do you think God is to His promises?

Luke 2:22-40............February 2, 2005

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of moses, they took him  up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that  opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord,"  and to offer the sacrifice of "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons,"  in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.  Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon.  This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the holy Spirit was upon him.  It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Messiah of the Lord.  He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying:  "Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel."  The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him;  and Simeon blessed them and said  to Mary his mother, "Behld, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce)  so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."  There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter  of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.  She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.  She never left the temple, but woshiped night and ay with fasting and prayer.  And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.  When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth.  The child greq and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Mark 6: 7 - 13 ..........February 3, 2005

And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.   He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts;   but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.   And he said to them, "Where you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place.  And if any place will not receive you and they refuse to hear you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet for a testimony against them."  So they went out and preached that men should repent.
And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.

Mark 6: 14 - 29......February 4, 2005

King Herod heard of it; for Jesus' name had become known. Some said, "John the baptizer has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him."   But others said, "It is Eli'jah." And others said, "It is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."   But when Herod heard of it he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised."  For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Hero'di-as, his brother Philip's wife; because he had married her.  For John said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."   And Hero'di-as had a grudge against him, and wanted to kill him. But she could not,  for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him, he was much perplexed; and yet he heard him gladly.   But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the leading men of Galilee.   For when Hero'di-as' daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will grant it."   And he vowed to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom."  And she went out, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the baptizer."  And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."   And the king was exceedingly sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her.   And immediately the king sent a soldier of the guard and gave orders to bring his head. He went and beheaded him in the prison,  and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.   When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body, and laid it in a tomb.

The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught.  He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while."  People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat.  So they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.  People saw them leaving and many came to know about it.  They hastened there on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them.  When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.

Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem,  they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed.  (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders;  and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels of bronze.)   And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled?"   And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, `This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;  in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'   You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men."  And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition!   For Moses said, `Honor your father and your mother'; and, `He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die';   but you say, `If a man tells his father or his mother, What you would have gained from me is Corban' (that is, given to God) --   then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother,  thus making void the word of God through your tradition which you hand on. And many such things you do."

Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,  so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.   But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,  that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry.   And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread."   But he answered, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"  Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple,  and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you,' and `On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'"   Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them;  and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me."  Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! for it is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'"  Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?'  And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.'  Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;  for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,  I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'  Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?'  Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.'   And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it."  When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.   But when they tried to arrest him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him to be a prophet.

Guide question:
In what areas do you find it hardest to exercise humility and patience?

Luke 15: 1 - 3, 11 - 32 ......February 26, 2005

Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him.  And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."  So he told them this parable:  And he said, "There was a man who had two sons; and the younger of them said to his father, `Father, give me the share of property that falls to me.' And he divided his living between them.  Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took his journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in loose living.  And when he had spent everything, a great famine arose in that country, and he began to be in want.
So he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have fed on the pods that the swine ate; and no one gave him anything.  But when he came to himself he said, `How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;
I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants."'  And he arose and came to his father. But while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, `Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'   But the father said to his servants, `Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet;  and bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.' And they began to make merry.  "Now his elder son was in the field; and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing.  And he called one of the servants and asked what this meant.  And he said to him, `Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound.'   But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,  but he answered his father, `Lo, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command; yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends.  But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you killed for him the fatted calf!'  And he said to him, `Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.  It was fitting to make merry and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.'"

John 4: 5 - 42 ........February 27, 2005

So he came to a city of Samar'ia, called Sy'char, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.  Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.  There came a woman of Samar'ia to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."  For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.   The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samar'ia?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.  Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, `Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."  The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water?  Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?"   Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again,  but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."   The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw."  Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."  The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, `I have no husband';  for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly."  The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.  Our fathers worshiped on this mountain; and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."  Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.   But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."  The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things."  Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."  Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people,  "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?"

Luke 4: 24 - 30

And he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country.  But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Eli'jah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land;  and Eli'jah was sent to none of them but only to Zar'ephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.  And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Eli'sha; and none of them was cleansed, but only Na'aman the Syrian."   When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong.  But passing through the midst of them he went away.

Guide question:
How can you possibly love God without loving the poor?

Without loving the poor,it is impossible to love God.As He said,"Whatever you do to my poorest brother, you also have done to Me."( can't think where can this be found, have to check it later)
