Title: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by mrs_nj on Dec 18th, 2008, 5:22pm Do you celebrate Christmas, Chinese New Year, Valentine, Halloween...? Or you don't and it is fine if you don't celebrate any of these holidays. How do you decorate your home? What kind of food/drinks do you serve? Share with us your tradition or rituals. |

Title: Re: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by teagirl on Dec 18th, 2008, 9:44pm Still trying to create a tradition of our own, Mrs NJ. Quite tricky really. But truth be told, I can't wait to "introduce" The Tall One to a Philippine Christmas. It's simply more meaningful and more fun that what we're having in Windy Wellie right now. |

Title: Re: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by mrs_nj on Dec 18th, 2008, 10:35pm I know exactly what you mean tricky. Tell me about the Philippine Christmas....what do you guys do exactly? Do you carol, do you exchange gifts or money? how do you celebrate? My side of the family we don't celebrate Christmas but I do buy gifts for my niece and my sister/brothers...in laws. My husband side they are the ones who celebrate Christmas. My MIL she goes to church 1 day before Christmas. We go to her house, exchange gifts and eat. My MIL usually cook turkey, mash potatoes and other stuff...each year is different. They usually set up a christmas tree. My mil gave me a tree but I don't know where to put it in my house...we have a parrot and dog. But I did decorate our house with some christmas decoration. I took some pictures...give me a day or 2 to download the picture here. We also trying to get a tradition going on but it is sooooooo hard. |

Post by 3iNnA on Dec 21st, 2008, 7:18am http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa51/njannie/reindeer.jpg just filling in the space on my bookcase http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa51/njannie/snowpeople.jpg always place on the mantel.... http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa51/njannie/end.jpg Our end table have some...the dog biscuit wreath is from my mother-in-law...this time I hang it on the lamp... I have more decoration but I have so much stuff at home I don't want it overwhelming. Everyone has their own way of decorating the house. My friend has only nativity and no christmas tree. She is pretty religious though so they don't believe christmas tree or santa clause...its interesting to see how people decorate in their house... |

Title: Re: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by 3iNnA on Dec 23rd, 2008, 5:36pm Growing up in my family we never fully understand what is Christmas...we (My family who believes in buddhism) assume it is Christmas tree, Santa...I used to enjoy decorating the tree in my parents home even though we never celebrate the holiday...we just decorate the tree...no presents though. So for me to understand the meaning of Christmas I had to do my own research... My husband and in-laws they celebrate Christmas but I don't think my in-laws have a nativity set though. Isn't it suppose to be center in the birth of Jesus Christ...I am not here to judge anyone...I am just learning also... Took me couple of weeks to decide if I want my tree up or not...Finally I say why not...my m.i.l bought this tree why not display it for her sake....I finally had the chance last night to take a picture. I never set up a christmas tree inside our (my husband and i) home. No place to put it because we have a parrot and a dog...its safer outside than inside I think ::) http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa51/njannie/treeoutside-1-1.jpg |

Title: Re: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by 3iNnA on Dec 25th, 2008, 7:26am In couple of weeks it will be Chinese New Year. New Year is not a big deal to us...we don't go all the way but with Chinese New Year we go all the way...we clean/organize the house, bring out the New Year dishes, new bills, red envelopes, shop for new clothes, candies, ordering champagne, whiskey, or any liquor, new hair style...new decoration for home and etc. Yes Chinese New Year is a big deal...ask my husband...laughing. He was very surprise how festive we are during Chinese New Year...Thats when all our relatives (whoever can take the day off or...) gather up and get drunk, chat/gossips, play poker, black jacks to win other money, handing out money to kids or to anyone who is single (once you have a kid or divorce you have to start giving...single is never ever married or never gave birth)... We usually prepare new year couple of weeks advance...I am...thats why sometimes I can't remember other stuffs because I have holidays/birthdays nonstop... |

Title: Re: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by 3iNnA on Jan 13th, 2009, 4:34am I am looking into my family ritual. They used to talk about it but because we are so Americanize they don't mention it but I hear it often. So I am researching my culture/traditions of how, when they celebrate their festivals. I really think it is important to know where you came from and not lose your identity. Have to keep it alive and to pass it from one generation to the next...even if you don't have kids it is good to pass it along. Value your nationality, your culture, your food/drinks, your lifestyle, fashion and so on. |

On Friday I went to shop for some Chinese New Year decoration and some red envelopes. I am very busy but not stress out. Burmese New Year is around April...need to do some research. |

Title: Re: Do you have a ritual with your family? Post by Wicked_Witch on Jan 27th, 2009, 7:56am We don't actually celebrate Chinese New year at home, but here in the Philippines, it's a big even of course in the Chinese Community here and we had fun watching them on TV with those colorful decors and dancing dragons in the streets. As for Christmas and New Year, it's the biggest holiday here and every Filipino looked forward to it year after year. Christmas is for kids, which means presents under the x'mas tree. We look to New Year as the new beginnings and most of us follow Chinese traditions, feng shui, in celebrating it. I guess for some it works, and for some it doesn't. But we still do it no matter if it changes our life or not because it's fun to do it. Like gathering 13 round fruits, (I still don't know why), shaking coins in your pocket (this to ensure that one's pocket will have money the whole year), lighting firecrackers (this is believed to drive away bad spirits at home), jumping up and down (this they said is to make you taller though I don't know how that is possible if you were born to dwarfs parents, and other traditions that I find funny, unbelievable, but still do it anyway.
