Title: The Gimpshop
Post by ReeBop on Nov 9th, 2005, 8:00am
There is a fascinating new open source project that has really caught my eye.  It's called the Gimpshop.  It takes the Gimp, and put on a Photoshop interface on it.  The Gimp, being one of the premere open source projects around can also be one of the most frustrating pieces of software to use.  This interface hack removes all the frustration and gives the user a much more familiar interface.  Here is an example screenshot from their website:

You can download the Gimpshop from their site here:

The neatest thing about it kris, is that it's free!  When you get it downloaded and installed, play around with it and give me your opinion.  You probably know much more about Photoshop than I do, and I'm interested in knowing how GimpShop feels to you.

Actually, the Gimpshop is so cool,Ree. There are lot of options. So much better than Adobe Photo Edittor. I can even make a picture looks like an old photo, design a frame. I can also make photo effects, such as, I am behind a glass wall, I can put a light directed to me or I am under the water and movable by using the mouse. I can even make my picture looks like a "cartoon".  ;D

Now, my big problem, is that I can't figure out how to save the editted file in which I can open after saving it, and change the file name (gzip/gz). After saving it and preview, it appears to be "unpreviewable", and requires me to search the web to open the files. So, I downloaded Stufflt, but I still can't see them!

How is this. I had fun editting pictures and I want to share to my nieces and nephew about this, but I have to figure out the problem. Please try using it , Mike and please teach me. I planned to show one picture here that was editted into many effects but  where are they now? I can't open them :-/   :'(.

It may be a week before I can tackle that one kris.  Maybe they have a forum on their website to ask about that problem?

A little Googling revealed this website:

Take a look...

Woohooo! My problem is solved ,Mike. I have finaly figured out !

I posted about my problem in their forum, under " Gimpshop Tutorial" , but I couldn't wait for a reply. So, while waiting, I kept trying to find out what should I have to do with the editted files. I tried to follow some steps I have read from one of the posters, and there I go. It was successfully saved right to my "Pictures"!

I still want to see what will they advise me,though.

That's great kris!  The thing that gets me is that this is the same program as The Gimp, but with an interface that is more familiar.  I will be trying this out as well.  I had a very difficult time with The Gimp and its default interface.  I do hope that the programmer keeps up with all the improvments that The Gimp team make with their software.
