Title: NBA finals Suns/Mavs Analysis
Post by thebeast on Jun 7th, 2006, 12:12am
Well now that we have the 2 teams who will playing for the title...lets have some in depth game analysis on the Miami Heat and the Dallas Mavericks. How do you think each team will play each other, the matchups, what team is better at what, the players...ect..ect....I will start with my analysis of this series.

The NBA is all about matchups...what player matches or can defend the other player on the other team...the funny thing in this game is that there are no real good matchups on either side. Look if Shaq is hot and scoring and Dirk is hot and scoring..they gonna get thier points there is just not a lot you can do about that. So what do you do. Well lets look at Miami's 2 playmakers...Shaq and Wade. First of all Miami is playing at a way higher level than they did during the regular season. You can tell by the way Shaq is playing like he was 4 or 5 years ago. Miami plays a slow game..they like to set the ball up and throw the ball into Shaq and he can try to get a little 4 foot hook or jump shot or slam dunk it or if he is double or triple teamed pass the ball out to the open guy. Shaq has become a lot better passer over the years. Shaq also has a very high field goal percentage. Makes sense because little 4 foot hook shots and jump shots and slam dunks are usually a high percentage shots. So how does Dallas defend Shaq. Well Dallas will take their biggest players ...Diop, Dampier, Mbenga, and possibly Van Horn to defend Shaq. They will defend him the only way you can defend him..push, shove, aggrivate and even foul him a lot. If you foul Shaq that is not a bad thing because Shaq dont make a lot of free throws. He is one of the worst in the NBA at free throws. I never seen so many bricks in my life. If you gonna foul Shaq dont let him get the shot off and dont put your best players like Nowitzki on him...Dirk will foul out and could even get hurt and Dallas would be in bad shape then.
Now when the Shaq attack isnt working for Miami they use Wade. Wade will post up other players and use screens by other Miami players in order to do his thing. What is his thing?  Drive the ball to the basket. Now when Wade drives the ball he has a few options. He can drive the ball to the basket and get an amazing slam dunk or lay up. He can stop on the dime and get a 14 or 15 footer. He can also shoot the 3 pointer. And he can drive to the basket and when the defense converges on him he can pass the ball to the open guy for an open shot. When Wade does any of this  he has a good chance of being fouled also.  Wade is a pretty good at making his free throws. Wade and Shaq are the playmakers for the Heat. If they are not playing well the other players will have to step up to win. Okay thats enough for now...feel free to objectively look at my analysis and critique it with your own analysis or form your own on either of these 2 teams.

I posted in the other thread, thinking this was a Suns / Mavs post-series analysis.  You are correct about Shaq.  Never before has such a dominating player been so bad at the charity stripe.  We can see from game 1 that even at Miami's tempo, the Mavericks found a way to stop Miami with a zone defense.  Also, consider the fact of the benches.  The Mavericks' bench is so far superior to Miami's that it is shameful.  I am not saying that Peyton, Mourning and the lot are that bad, but compared to who they are facing, it signifies major strategy problems for them.  When Shaq sits, Mourning comes in for about 10 minutes tops.  Maybe he can play 15 but no more.  What if the Mavericks go small and throw foul magnets like Van Horn and Powell to frustrate Shaq, then run the floor.  I am not talking about a Suns pace, but pushing the ball at each turn.  The Mavericks can throw so many changes at you at a moment's notice.  For example, look at the zone they tried out.  It completely stymided Miami and they could not find a way to get the ball into Shaq.  Please, just let Walker shoot away and he'll shoot Miami clean out of a game.  Was DWade good, heck yes but he cannot do it all himself.

I agree ree. By looking at the first 2 games...you can see what happens when your 2 best players are not producing like they are capable of doing. Dallas has had a very good game plan the first 2 games. Thanks to the coach of the year Avery Johnson. I think Coach Johnson has been great for Dallas. But you cant just put the 2 wins on a great plan also...Miami hasnt played to thier full potential. After viewing the first 2 games I agree with Ree on Dallas has a lot more ways to beat Miami..but thats only in the 1st 2 games...I think Miami can beat Dallas but I dont think they can beat them in a 7 game series. At first I didnt think they could be physical with them...but they proved me wrong. The defending on Shaq and Wade has been pretty good. Dallas is gonna force other players on Miami to produce for them...so far Miami has come up short. I not really care who wins...I just want to see good close games and want it to be a 7 game series....so far I have been disapointed.  :-[

Game 2 showed everyone that Miami has a big problem with a collapsing zone into the paint.  Wade is a good player, but is too early in his development to know how to handle it.  Also, it takes decent players that can snap the ball around on the outside and good jumper capability to break a zone, and Miami does not have that.  Miami's only hope for this series is that they can slow down the game to be a half court slugfest.  Any type of running game will spell their downfall.  Someone also needs to send a message to Antoine Walker that he can kill a team with his constant attempts at three point shooting.  He is big enough that he can go to the rack but in this point of his career, does not want to.

Personally I think Dirk Nowitzki is the best player on the court now. He reminds me a lot of Larry Bird. I mean look at him. He dont even look like a basketball player. He is tall but clumsy. I am willing to bet he is one of the slowest players in the league. If u watch him run down the court you can see he is pigeontoed.  But like Bird, Dirk has a great all around game. Offensively he can play outside, take the ball inside and post up and he has a great mid game as well.  He can make his shots from just about anywhere on the court. He has a fade away shot thats unstoppable when he is hot. I think he is even harder to defend than Shaq. He is a good passer and rebounder as well. Dirk gets my vote for MVP for the series...at least for the first 2 games anyway.

Dirk all the way.  On the second game, everyone chanted his name  on the 4th quarter because it seems   heat is gaining some points.  ONce again he proved he made the team alive.
Yeah I wish he will win the MVP award.!!!Go Mavericks!!!!!Maverick's double teaming seems to be working....good defense!!!Maverick quick move team work   passing and their defensive tactics are their strong points against the heat.  Three pointers and four pointers Stackhouse, and Terry   love it love it. Seems like Mavericks gain some points again in the 3rd game. Dapier 7 lay out  dunks....Hope they pull it through again!!!GO DIRK!!!
I like Wade in Miami as well.  He is a great player.  Miami come back in the 4th quarter..what a game!!!2-1 great move on their defense lock down.

Dewayne Wade's knee is swollen and he can't bend it.  Will their doctors get the swelling down in time? What kind of joint injury does he have?  If he can't play, or play at his level, the Heat are in big trouble.

I think to drive the ball to the basket and more outside shooting is the reason. Sometimes it works sometimes it dont. Dallas should of won game 3 but they didnt...game 4...they were never really in it. All tied up now. game 3 was the best game so far. Going back to Dallas. Dallas still has the edge. Miami has to beat Dallas in Dallas. If Dallas plays like they did for the 2 games in Miami..they might just do it.

There isn't a damn thing wrong with Wade's knee. That's just all hype and stuff for the announcers to comment about. You can't make moves like he does and have a hurt knee. It just ache a little is all.

Well game 5 was the best so far. Dallas had plenty of opportunities to win this game. The Dallas Mavs and thier fans can complain all they want to about Stackhouse being suspended for the game...but when it comes down to the game itself...its the players who lost game 5. When you dont make your free throws at the end of a close game...you will lose. It is that simple. Josh Howard missed both his free throws and even Dirk missed one of his. Josh Howard also gets the bonehead award because he called a time out before Wade finishes his freethrows...so then the Mavs have to take the ball  the full court instead of a half a court in the final few seconds. Statistically even a few seconds at half court isnt isnt very probable but its a hell of a lot better than the full court. Now I would like to discuss the suspension of Jerry Stackhouse for the foul that he gave Shaq in game 4...I think its pretty lame of the executives of the NBA to do that. Come on...for that???? Look Shaq is over 7 foot tall and weighs over 300 pounds..you have to foul the guy hard or he is gonna score. Even Shaq said it was a hard foul...not flagrant...I really believe the front office of the NBA cant stand Mark Cuban. The Mavs have already had 3 players suspended in these playoffs. I didnt even think the punch that Terry threw on Finley in San Antonio deserved a suspension but rules are rules. You dont suspend someone for a hard foul. And I have seen a lot more harder fouls than that one as well..I have to agree with Avery Johnson  that the NBA officials are not calling fouls that are consistent and the NBA executives are not determining these suspensions on a consistent basis as well. Anyway I hope Dallas wins game six and it goes in overtime as well. This is a pretty good series...much better than last year.  ;D
