Title: The Beautiful Game - World Cup 2006 Germany
Post by ReeBop on Jun 10th, 2006, 7:29am
What are your predictions for the World Cup in Germany?  Can the US, with the strongest squad ever, move on in what some see as a difficult group?  Will Brazil repeat?  Can England win it all without the services of Rooney? Will The Cote d' Ivorie be the suprise ot the tournement?  With the first two games over, what do you think?  Ecuador looked quite impressive against a rather lethargic Poland team.  Even though Germany scored 4, Costa Rica did give a good account of themselves.  Can Germany get away with that type of defense against a stronger team?  Lots of questions here, let's hear your answers!

The US Soccer team completely made an embarassment of themselves against the Czech Republic. This 3-0 loss has probably booted them from the World Cup.  Bruce Arena will more than likely be making big changes to ensure that does not happen again.  Key to the loss was the absence of any attacking style of play from Landon Donovan and especially DeMarcus Beasley.  Reyna cannot do it all on his own, and it is incredible that Eddie Johnson, the firey player that he is, is not starting.  Maybe they just need to give Precki or Lawless a call to kick them in the behind.  If this team continues to play with no heart or guts, who will be the blame?

Now that all the teams have played their first game, there are some standout team performances that we can take notice of.  Spain looked very very strong, even though the Ukraine was quite unlucky with that sending off.  Penalty? Heck no.  Germany did beat the Poles, but it took nearly the whole game to do it.  Brazil did not look like the world beater that everyone thinks they are.  England has nothing to brag about with their win against Paraguay.  France appears that they are going nowhere fast with all that talent they have.  Tunisia has a lot to celebrate for now, with a strong effort against the Saudis, but can they do that against a strong opponent?  The same goes for the Socceroos.   I have read that Arena will be making lineup changes for the US match against Italy.  Arena has scouted the Italians personally for a long time knowing this match was coming.  Let's hope his efforts will pay off.  Right now, the Czechs and the Spanards look the strongest.  Will the other favorites step up their play?

I'm hoping very much that the US has another great showing like they did in 2002.  Looking at their group, I feel they have a strong chance of doing just that.  England also should move right along, but, I think they will have their strange on again / off again moments like they did in their qualifiers.  If the Brazilians are not lazy, they will win it all again.  If the Brazilians do not play up to their abilities, look for the host Germans to step up and win the cup because of the "home field" advantage.
The real fun is though is which "cinderella" club will be the darlings of the Cup.   There has been one of those for the past few Cups, with the US in 1994 being one of them.  Will it be Austrailia, one of the African teams again? Who knows....
